I have no canonical evidence to back this up, but my theory is that a wizard with enough power and subtlety (i.e., not Draco, haha :P) can cast the Imperius to be more of a quiet, undeniable voice in the back of the mind, and less like a brick to the back of the head. So they would operate as per usual, but still be obeying that voice.

Harry's different. It stands to reason that Voldemort wouldn't be able to hold him under - Harry's the Yin to Voldemort's Yang; conventional methods don't work against either of them (yes, I'm a scarcrux theorist :D). Besides, Harry seems to have some sort of natural defence against it - Barty Jr couldn't hold him under either.

Hmmm... Harry threw off fake!Moody's curse (and fake!Moody managed to hold his father under the curse more or less successfully for a long period of time without them actually living in the same household...), but then again, Moody might have allowed him to do it...

Tricky.

This is what I love about the Potterverse - she provides so little solid information, and yet a vast and complex universe, so you can pretty much make anything you want happen. I personally tend to set quite a bit of store on the person casting the spell, and their intentions, as being factors which affect the actual spell itself. With something like Imperio, I'd take into account the person it's being cast upon, as well.

Harry, for example. Harry does not understand subtlety. I don't think Harry would understand subtlety if he had the definition tattooed onto his arse. So I don't think Harry would even realise if a very subtle Imperius was placed upon him - if he had a burning need to throw himself upon Draco at any gibbon given opportunity, he'd be looking around for the person who cast the love spell on him, and finding cures for that, because that's what's obvious. He's also stubborn and powerful, so it stands to reason that throwing a very obvious Imperius at him won't work ( ... )
