Actually, I felt a little cheated, til I rewatched it and realized how many clues were scattered throughout the whole show and it struck me as rather clever.
The ep was both really clever and really dumb, if you know what I mean. It was also way too confusing to the point of being boring in places, and so the writers livened it up with the exploding eyeballs and scrotums.
That was what helped the episode for me. It wasn't clever or weird enough to be metaphysical and it was confusing at parts, but man, that EYEBALL. I think I did the cootie dance for like, ten minutes after that.
What I enjoyed the most there were the letters of H.C. Andersen. Poor bloke, he was so frustrated! *pets him*
I mean, you can tell that from reading his stories, sure, but to see him write down his agony in letters to his friends? Both amusing and sad. Can't you just imagine how his correspondends must have felt? "Oh, I got a new letter from Hans, honey. Yup, he's still a virgin. Still moaning about it." :p
Altogether, I was slightly disappointed. But it's sort of a cool thing to have in the town anyway.
And yes, poor Hans... That man had a miserable life in many respects. He seems to have loved so passionately. In a way also childishly and chaste, but every person has a carnal drive and I don't think his was ever tried.
Yes, I agree about being slightly disappointed - that's why I mentioned Andersen's letters being the high point, they were some of the very few 'real' items there - it seemed very much random dildos, red velvet and pin-up girls ;)
But I went there in 2000, so it might have changed.
I did a "dramatic retelling" of his story, Den uartige Dreng (don't you love that title?!) for school, and highlighted the aspects of pedophilia just a tiny bit, so it came out really disturbing. My teacher loved it ;)
