I hadn't planned on that part--Sam going there to die--but it just seemed to work. He's so desperate to end the voices and the madness that he's ready to do anything.

The voices of Hell, which have been quiet for so long, begin again, a distant crackle on the horizon. Yet, before Sam closes his eyes for one last time, he hears a familiar voice above the din that whispers, "Thanks, Sammy."

Oh, boys.

Poor Sam, so tormented and so desperate to ease his and Dean's pain. The image of him playing even as his fingers bled made me ache so much for him.
