Last night I reinstalled for what seems like the twentieth time.

Tonight I’m re-doing my CC. Store stuff only along with my favourite default replacements from TAMO.

I feel like I haven’t actually played Generations yet because every time I’ve opened the game lately, there has been a problem.

What’s your absolute, must have custom content? I use hacks

I feel your pain. Really. I'm not much help because I'm in the process of considering reinstalling and I too am looking for better CC. I know I love Newsea's hair over at TSR and some things from Papercat. Mostly I snag stuff from the booty.

Hmm, I have to have default replacement skins and eyes in my game, and I use skins by ephemera and eyes by HystericalParoxysm at modthesims currently. And I definitely understand - since installing Generations, I've had nothing but game issue after game issue. :|

Ugh. I feel for you... and now that yet another patch has come out, I'm experiencing waves of pre-patch anxiety. DX
As far as must-haves, I would probably go with a heaping handful of lotus's hairs and perhaps some paintings and decorations(I like Bau, Club Crimsyn, Repulsive Desire, Awesims).

Otherwise, I think the store content will give you sufficient variety in terms of furniture, clothing, and the rest.
