This isn't an easy post to write, because I know I might piss some people off. Hell, given the way things are going, maybe this is like waving a red flag. Or not... the way I so often qualify things.
I concur with this. And I am completely blanking on the episode... but there was a CM ep in S2 that I am pretty sure had Hotch mentioning how the "Danger-Stranger" campaign was really one of the biggest mistakes, right up there with Smokey Bear. (Well, I added the Smokey Bear reference, but it's true, too.)
It makes people think that the next door neighbor is always safe and good place, where as the plain-clothes police officer stranger is automatically a bad guy... and we all know that that just isn't true 100% of the time. Serial Killers don't wear labels or dress a certain way. Pedophiles don't have it tattooed across their foreheads or look different than the neighbor next door.
And I am not going to go into the wrongness in how WFI or the other groups are going about this, how I think it's all wrong... because what they are doing is making the criminals *better* at hiding... because that pretty much entails a discussion into the groups themselves and I'm really not willing to go there and I am not up to opening that can of worms.
