If I had had any idea how hard it would be to back on seizure meds, I never ever would have gone off them.  But then if the first neurologist had said how likely it would be that I would have a seizure if I wasn't on them (instead of just saying the only drawback was not driving for six months), I wouldn't have even considered it

Is it possible that you had the brand-name version once and a generic version the other time? If so, you might try switching back to the exact formulation you had before. While generics are supposed to be the same as the original drug, I've read lots of cases where they are subtly (or unsubtly) different.
