A subtle question, if cliche'd. And the answer should not be an answer but a moral compass, one that makes you use those few pounds of muscle and gristle surrounded by a sheath of bone sitting atop your spinal column. The answer should be a statement of guidance, shying from further cliche and unsteeped in that which only belabours the point.
The point..
Ah, a point...
The point being that in asking the question you already have an answer, the format and placement of the question belies the nature of the reasoning, the reasoning being a statement of motive.
There's a sliding scale of responsibility, severity, and stability. If the truth is going to be that painful, then I wouldn't hesitate to conceal entirely the truth. Honesty is never the best policy; ignorance, can be, and often is, bliss. I wish you the best of luck in one of the most annoying ethical conumdrums yet faced!

So, in conclusion, I give the answer..
And in the answer, I ask a question.
Why would you lie?
