Last night I decided to be proactive and went to the Arts Administration open house at Columbia. It was a good experience that neither turned me off from the program, nor made me decide it was what I wanted to do with my life. The big negative (aside from the fact that's it's Columbia and they only take 25 students into the program each year so ( Read more... )

Briefly ...
(1) cool abt the open house (2) there's often money for MAs if you can find it/ TA positions (3) Soap Digest ... make a spot for yourself. I say guerrilla warfare if that's where you want to work. Find people. Seek them out. Don't just send resumes, actually talk to them. One way to get to know someone w/out the job begging part that might work for you right now: ask to have an informational interview with them. It gives you the same opportunity you had with that chick last night, to talk about what that person does, what the industry is like and how she got there. It also gives you some time to talk about yourself to that person. They might have some ideas for you. And if you follow up/stay in touch they might reccomend you. And if nothing else you know a little bit more about what you were thinking about doing than you did before. Maybe from that interview you discover it was(n't) for you for sure. I think I need to put on a game face and do the same.

John told me something once that I think is very true - you don't apply for the best jobs; the best jobs are made for you. Once you get your foot in the door, and you network like Eileen says, people who know you and what you're good at will find a place to put your best talents at work. This is what's happening to John; he's shown his merit, and one of his bosses did literally create a researcher job position that they're going to put John in once he's finished with his current project. You can do it!! *cheerleader voice*
