Fortunately I need it for the work I do at the university, so they pay for it!

I am now very jealous... I could easily spend a couple of grand getting the whole program - it looks very shiny with lots of easily manipulatable features.

I've been using GIMP for ages.

It's free. The website has tutorials. It has quite a lot of functions.

I like it - and I used it to make your icons.

I have downloaded, now I just have to work out how to use it...
This could be fun and time-consuming.

It took me a while, but I can probably answer any questions. The website has tutorials, as well, which should help.

You may well get a series of emails with much swearing in the near future. I downloaded the help section as well, so that might help. Now I just have to install it all!

Photofiltre is by far and away the best free photo app I've used - and it's free (obviously!) - snag yourself a copy Here

I had a look, but I could not work out what I needed to download. Once again I am defeated by my lack of geek. I am having a go with GIMP (recommended by icedmaple for now.

I use Photoshop. It's easy to work in layers once you get the hang of it. I taught myself by googling for a beginner's guide. The icon I'm using here was created out of several photographs and a lot of 'fiddling around'. She's my character in a geeky RPG.

I like the look of Photoshop, but it is very expensive - over £800 for the nice version, unless you know somewhere cheap for it?

At the moment I am trying to install GIMP and have a go with that, as it is free and recommended by icedmaple.

You might know someone with a copy... not that I'm condoning piracy. Um, wait, yes I am! Or there's always eBay for cheaper versions. I've got Photoshop 6.0 and it does everything I want it to, but I can't find my copy so I haven't installed it on the new PC yet. Bah.
