“Young Master, I’m sorry to interrupt, but I’ve brought your afternoon tea.” A young maid bustled in, pushing a silver trolley towards Minho’s desk, placing the cup carefully on the mahogany table, trying to pour the tea slowly. Her hand jolted, spilling the tea everywhere. Her eyes widened as she gasped, and she attempted to clean up the mess, but only ended up making a bigger one. Minho swiped away the papers on the table before they got soaked in tea. The maid burst into tears, bowing her head down in apologies. She got down on her knees, looking up pleadingly at Minho. “I’m sorry. Please, Young Master….” She cried.
Minho sighed, and placed a hand on her shoulder. The maid flinched, but relaxed again at his touch, surprised that he hadn’t yelled at her yet. “It’s fine. Just clean up the mess and get out. I’m not in the mood for tea, anyway.” Minho flashed her a quick smile, before he waved his hand at her, motioning for her to go. The maid uttered a million thanks before proceeding out, and Minho was left to himself again. He let out a sigh of relief; he was never alone. He never had any time to himself. It was always duties here, duties there. Life as a royal wasn’t as easy as everyone thought it was.
The only time he enjoyed was at night, when he could lie awake on his bed, just enjoying the silence that finally accompanied him. Some people said that their castle was eerie, and haunted, but Minho liked it. It would lull him to sleep, and even though he would only get a few hours of it, he never minded at all.
“Young master, your father is asking for you by the stables.” A servant walked in, and Minho nodded his head slightly. He proceeded to where the servant said his father was waiting, and there sat by his feet a small, golden puppy. His father greeted him with a smile, and Minho bowed respectfully, eyeing the ball of fluff that sat by his father’s feet.
“Happy Birthday, Minho. I’m sorry I’m never around anymore, but please accept this puppy to remind you that I would want to spend my time more with you, even though I can’t.” A small frown spread across his father’s face, but Minho merely smiled and shook his head.
“Its fine father, I understand.” He carefully picked up the puppy from the ground and grinned.
“His name is moonlight.”
“Moonlight, I like that name.”
Minho spent his free time during day playing with his new puppy and he enjoyed it. He’s grown to like the daytime, but his old habit of staying up at night never died. Moonlight would curl up beside him on his bed, and he would pat his soft fur until sleep came to him. It stayed like that for a few years, until Taemin showed up.
“Moonlight, where are you boy?” Minho called out, searching for his dog in the vast garden. He heard the familiar bark behind him and turned, and he saw Moonlight with a very lanky looking boy, who was petting him calmly. He jogged over there slowly and stood in front of him, until the boy looked up. “Can I have my dog back?” He asked with a slight bitter tone in his voice.
“They say dogs can see spirits. I’m not alone.” The boy spoke, and Minho was puzzled, but he simply ignored him. He called Moonlight towards him, and the dog hesitantly followed. Minho walked away, but he couldn’t get the boy off his mind. There was something about him, yet Minho didn’t know what. The boy plagued his mind, and Minho couldn’t take it anymore. He tore the castle apart, turning it inside out, just looking for him. He was on the brink of giving up one day, when Moonlight ran off somewhere, and Minho followed him. The dog led him back towards Taemin, and he felt a small smile creep up his face.
“Hi. I believe we met before. My name is Minho. But I bet you already knew that.”
Taemin nodded his head and patted Moonlight’s head, as he looked up at Minho. “My name is Taemin.”
Along with Moonlight’s company, Minho also enjoyed Taemin’s company as well. But that was when it all started spiraling down.
“Young master, why are you spending so much time with Taemin? I’m concerned about you, he’s…odd.” His personal servant lectured him one day, but Minho merely rolled his eyes at her.
“He’s fine.”
That night, however, Moonlight got off the bed, just when Minho was about to slip into unconsciousness. The dog started howling, and scratched against the door, begging to be let out. “Quiet down, Moonlight. We’ll play tomorrow.” Minho turned around, but the dog kept howling. He sighed and finally opened the door, watching as the dog dashed down the hallway quickly. He shook his head and sank back into bed. Just when he thought he could finally sleep again, he heard Moonlight’s distant howl, and every dog in town, no; it seemed like all the dogs in the country were howling along. Minho buried his head under his pillows to try and drown the noise out, but it was no use.
The dog’s peculiar behaviour continued on for a few days, and when Minho opened the door to let him out one night, he found Taemin standing in the hallway, holding his hands to his ears. “Please make it stop. Please make it stop. Make it quiet again. They’re calling them. They’re calling them.” He repeated. Minho approached him slowly, putting a hand on his shoulder. Taemin jumped, and his frightened eyes met Minho’s. “Please make them stop…” his bottom lip quivered, and before he knew it, Taemin’s face was buried in Minho’s chest. Minho impulsively ran his fingers through Taemin’s hair, trying to calm him down. Minho pulled him back into his room, where they snuggled under his blankets together. Minho knew it was weird, but oddly, he enjoyed it. The dog’s weird behaviour continued, and Minho didn’t mind as much because he knew Taemin would be there again, but there was just enough of that which he could handle.
“Please make them stop…” Taemin pleaded again, and Minho grabbed his hand, dragged him down the winding hallways, and down the kitchen. He grabbed a butcher knife and exited out in the garden, searching for Moonlight. He spotted the dog, howling endlessly at the moon. “Please make them stop…” Taemin repeated, his hands still covering his ears. Minho approached the dog slowly, but that was when his vision blurred. The next thing he saw was Taemin curled up in a fetal position, rocking himself back and forth, with the mutilated remains of Moonlight beside him. “He called them. He called them. They’re everywhere now. Please make them stop…Please make them go away.” There was a momentary silence, and Minho knelt down beside him, placing a hand on his head.
“Taemin, Moonlight’s gone. He won’t be pestering us anymore.” He smiled, but the boy turned his head and looked at Minho as if he were insane.
“He called them. He called them. They’re everywhere now. Please make them stop…” he cried. Minho tried to comfort him, but other dogs in the distance started howling again. That was when he lost it. He told Taemin to stay put, as he walked out and wandered into town. He couldn’t recall what he did exactly, but he knew that by the end of the night, it was silent once more. He laughed and walked back to Taemin, who remained curled up on the ground.
“Taemin, they’re gone now. They’re all gone now. We can sleep again.”
A shrill scream was heard, as Minho’s personal servant found them lying side by side that morning, the butcher knife still in Minho’s hands. Taemin and Minho were ushered into straitjackets, into a carriage, and into the mad house. Taemin kept muttering something under his breath and Minho was struggling, before they threw him inside the padded cell. Taemin was kept in an ordinary jail-like cell, and he sat in the corner, scratching at the walls.
“Make them stop. Make them stop. Make them stop…”
“Let me see Taemin. Please, let me see Taemin. I want to see him. Please.” Minho bothered the guard every day, until he finally gave in. Minho was transferred into the cell beside Taemin’s and he ecstatically stood up to search for Taemin through the small barred window that separated their cells. “Taemin, are you there?”
“They’re everywhere. They’re everywhere. Please make them stop. I don’t want to play with them; I don’t know who killed them and I can’t help them. Please make them go away, Minho.” Taemin cried.
Minho was confused. “Taemin, I thought you meant make the dogs go away. What are you talking about?”
“The spirits, the fairies, the damn unicorns, they’re everywhere. I don’t like them, Minho. I don’t like them. Please make them go away…”
Minho stuck his arm through the bars, and opened his palm. “Taemin, take my hand. As long as you’re holding it, I won’t let them harm you. You’re safe with me.”
Taemin stumbled up and took Minho’s hand in his. “I’m safe with you…” he repeated.
