Minho had always been dubbed as the emotionless one; people often referred to him as “the stone.” He was always found alone, and he never smiled, or spoke unless he was spoken to. But that was before he met Jong Hyun. Before, he was a fortress of solitude. But it wasn't really to his liking, either. He was a kind, caring person; it was simply a problem of conveying his emotions properly. But Jong Hyun changed all of that.

Minho spotted him in the park one chilly autumn day, and he stood up, his breath forming slight wisps of condensation as he breathed. The blonde one had a camera in his hands, and he seemed to be taking pictures of random things around him. Minho was a perfectionist; he liked getting things done a certain way. And that was definitely not how he took pictures.

Minho clutched his own camera firmly, as he approached the blonde one closer, and closer, until Jong Hyun noticed and turned around. His eyes met Minho’s, as he flashed him a small smile. Minho stumbled back, tripped on his own feet, and landed on his ass. Jong Hyun rushed over and offered a hand, and Minho gladly took it. He got up, but neither let go of the other’s hand.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

Minho never knew that the short exchange of words would welcome him towards a wave of emotions.

--

Jong Hyun persisted on remaining nameless to Minho, and the latter only knew him by his nickname “Bling.”  They had gotten to know each other better by chatting in a local coffee shop, and with each passing day, Minho found himself growing more and more open to him. Slowly, he had started smiling. The smiles then progressed into genuine laughs. Minho treasured his time with Jong Hyun very well.

But the emotions that had been welling up inside him were so unfamiliar to Minho. They were new; he felt like he had just discovered something alien. Since being more open with Jong Hyun, he figured that he should try talking to his actual friends. He could only think to turn to one person who both had experience, and wouldn’t judge him: Jinki. Jinki said that what he was feeling was merely infatuation. He also mentioned that if he waited long enough that it would blossom into something even more beautiful called love.

Minho was lost in a wave of questions, his head spinning and spiraling around with each unanswered one. His mind couldn’t be left like that. He needed clarity, even though Jinki had told him to “go with the flow”. Well, that flow was taking him straight towards Jong Hyun, as he found him sitting on a park bench, his camera sitting idly on his lap.  Minho opened his mouth, ready to flood him with questions, but Jong Hyun merely smiled up at him and patted the spot next to him. Minho was confused once again, but he sat down, nonetheless.

“Minho, why did you decide to become a photographer?” Minho was caught off guard by his sudden question, and he took a minute to ponder about it.

“I’m trying to look for true beauty. That’s the only reason I wanted to become a photographer. When I find it, I want to share it with everyone through my photographs. But so far, I don’t think I’ve found it yet.”

“That’s because you search with your eyes, not your heart. You still don’t quite know how to listen to it properly.”

“I’ve been trying, but I just can’t do it. I don't hear anything but irrelevant thumping sounds. How am I supposed to make sense out of that?”

“Have you never bothered to ask for help?” Jong Hyun peered over to his right and saw Minho looking down on his lap.

“No.”

“Then how about I help you now?” Minho raised an eyebrow and opened his mouth to ask, but he was shocked to find Jong Hyun’s lips on his. He remained still, not knowing how to respond; but he felt something different. Suddenly, he finally understood what Jinki meant with “going with the flow”. He turned slowly and wrapped his arms around Jong Hyun’s waist, pulling him closer as their kiss deepened. That was it; his infatuation had bloomed into the beautiful thing called love, and he could ask for nothing more.

When they pulled away, the clouds of steam from their breaths combined into one, before disappearing into thin air. Minho could hear the pounding of his heart reverberating in his ears, and he basked in the wonderful sound.

“Did that help?” Jong Hyun asked with another one of his smiles, and Minho replied with a smile of his own.

--

Minho bit his lip anxiously as he eyed the envelope in his hands. It was thick, but not quite heavy, and Jong Hyun had written Minho’s name on the front.

“Don’t open this until New Year’s eve. Wait until the last few minutes.” Jong Hyun handed the envelope to Minho, and the latter took it gladly, cradling it against his chest with a smile. Although, he had nothing to give back to him and worried, but as if reading his mind, Jong Hyun laughed and snapped a picture of Minho before his smile faded away. “That will do. Don’t worry about it.” He said again, yet with another one of his signature smiles.

It was five minutes before the New Year, and Minho’s fingers were busy dialing Jong Hyun’s number. But it kept responding with his voice mail. Minho sighed in defeat and decided that he couldn’t wait for him any longer. Despite the chattering from the New Year’s party his friends were throwing, his mind was more preoccupied with other things, His fingers slowly opened the flap at the end of the envelope, and a bunch of pictures came spilling out on his lap. They were all pictures of him. There were some of him sleeping, talking, a whole bunch of him with candid faces, but in all the pictures, he was smiling.

Minho didn’t even know, or perhaps didn’t notice, that Jong Hyun was taking those. Something stiff felt stuck in the envelope, and as he reached for it, he pulled out a letter, with another picture stuck to the back. It was that one of him and Jong Hyun, the one he was “forced” to take, but nevertheless he did, in which they were both grinning ear to ear. Their level of friendship (or was it more than that?) was too much. Yet Minho still didn’t know why Jong Hyun had given him that. He read the letter, relieved to see Jong Hyun’s familiar scrawl on it.

Minho,

I hope you find space in your heart to forgive me for this, but by the time you’re reading this, I’m probably already a few hundred miles away from you. But please don’t worry; if fate really wished for anything to happen, I’m sure we’ll meet again someday. To be honest, I never had any intention of staying there for that long until I met you. You were looking for something, and I knew I needed to help you find it. If it’s true beauty that you really seek, then stop looking so hard; sometimes, what you’re looking for is right under your nose. And it your case, it’s pretty literal. Your emotions and your heart, both of which I clearly see in you when you smile, is the most beautiful thing to me. I will treasure the memory of it forever, as I hope you treasure the memory of me in your heart. When you smiled for that first time, your happiness just radiated over to me. I felt so alive. You should share that feeling with everyone else around you, Minho.

--Kim Jong Hyun

P.S. I hope you don’t forget that name. I assure you we’ll meet again someday. Until then, have a happy New Year, and keep smiling. (:

“….5, 4, 3, 2, 1. HAPPY NEW YEAR!” much cheering went on as confetti was thrown everywhere, but Minho only sat there, stupefied. “Fireworks!” Someone from the party crowd exclaimed, and Minho was glad that they all gathered by the window, which left him sitting by himself.

The feeling of pain, and betrayal overwhelmed him, and he was sure that his tears were soon going to spill over. That was when he felt a hand on his shoulder, and he looked up to see Jinki’s worried expression. “Minho, are you okay?” Minho swallowed the hard lump in his throat and managed a small nod, but Jinki knew better. He wrapped his arms around Minho’s neck and buried Minho's face in his chest. “It’s fine if you don’t want to tell me. But feel free to cry.”

Moments after, Minho’s shoulders shook, and Jinki felt his shirt dampen. But he stood there, still offering sympathy for his friend. Minho suddenly came to a realization that crying over it then was pointless. It wasn’t going to bring Jong Hyun running back to him; that sort of thing only happened in movies. He realized that instead of being mad at him for leaving, that he should be thankful. He was thankful to Jong Hyun for finally showing him how to let his emotions out. Thankful for having met someone like him. He pried his face away from Jinki’s shirt and wiped his face as he looked up gratefully at his friend. With all the effort he had in him, he pulled the corners of his mouth up into a smile. Jinki tilted his head to the side, as he couldn't believe his eyes. Was Minho…smiling?

“Happy New Year to you too, Jong Hyun." Minho said under his breath.

"What was that?"

"Oh, n-nothing. Hyung, thank you.” Minho said, before his smile had turned into a small laugh. Jinki was relieved to see him like that, and ruffled his hair slightly.

“Happy New Year, Minho.” He carved that image of Minho's smile in his memory. Suddenly, he had never felt more refreshed. Maybe it was because of the new year; perhaps it was Minho's smile. But whatever it was, he was thankful for it. "Let's go watch the fireworks."

Minho nodded as they both headed towards everyone else, peering their heads to look out the window. Colours burst in the sky like blooming flowers; the thought made Minho think about his love, but like Jong Hyun told him, he kept it dearly in his heart, never to be forgotten. He swore to himself that he would find him again someday. And he kept holding onto that dream.
