PLAY SUIKODEN. IT IS AMAZING. The first two (for the PS1) if you can get ahold of them, although the rest are good too. Also if you've played Xenosaga you might wanna give Xenogears a shot. OH and also Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger (which there's a PS1 version although with FF4 as a part of Final Fantasy Chronicles). ...and yeah get a PS1 memory card there's soooo many good RPGs on that thing and you can get third-party cards for cheap on Ebay if you look. XD

I pimp OKAGE at you! It's for the PS2, is a turn-based RPG and is really really cheap on Amazon or eBay! I've got scans of the manual in Japanese and in English as well as almost the entire game scripted as links in a post at the top of Rosalyn's journal. IT IS AMAZING CRACK. And has items like "cholesterol: a scary product that introduces you to the world of fat".

Seconding Baten Kaitos! The first game is more turn-based, while the second one/prequel (Baten Kaitos Origins) is more real-time. Both are gorgeous and really fun though \o\ ETA: Oh yeah, how can you NOT want to play a game that lets you make an attack item called "Stalker Note," among others? 8D

Other turn-based RPGs I like include Skies of Arcadia (...this one's old so you might not be able to find it anymore) and the 3D Fire Emblem games aka Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. \o\

Seconding Knights of the Old Republic (though it isn't really turn-based, it has awesome AI for your allies so you can just sort of hang out, and D&D rules, and interesting characters and multiple endings and mmm, Bioware~ (Mass Effect is supposed to be the improved version of this system, but you can't Force choke anyone). Also seconding Chrono Trigger, which is active time battle IIRC (it's been years since I played it though). And if you want to continue to kick it old school, check out FF5 or 6 (or 4, but it's slow) on GBA--by now, stores should have marked them down enough to cancel out the Square tax... (or just emulate the SNES versions :3)
