hey all. i'm going to speak up a little bit about some of the talk lately concerning student government's involvement in the policies on AIM and the town meetings.
1. we decided against, yes, against the decision the school made about AIM. unfortunately, we didn't have much say in it. i think its another violation of our personal freedom that is already cut short by going to a private school. unfortunately, because of some forms of publication, which have consistenly not questioned us about our actual opinions (such as the new policy on drinking at dances) and generated false rumors about our actions, few know this.
2. i know we're taking an activity period for the upcoming town meeting. several points to make on that. a. we wanted an assembly, and couldn't get one. they are indeed booked. we tried all the other possibilities, this was the last resort. b. we gave plenty of advance notice, or at least i consider 3-4 weeks enough (if you remember the assembly before thanksgiving, we had an announcement). c. while this may not immediately appeal to every individual, i think its a huge step towards increasing the communication between the reps and the student body. it gives us some excellent time to explain to you all whats going on this year, and give us a much better idea of what you all want. personally, i think that's important enough to take one meeting period away, as it may strongly affect the outcome of the next year(s). if it doens't...it won't happen again. but as far as new, innovative and potentially useful ideas go, this is a good one.
lastly, lakeside is a tough school. lots of work and stress. people will never all agree with the decisions we make as representatives, and that's cool, we understand that, that's why you have the option to vote for us or against us later this year as you see fit. HOWEVER, before assuming the worst, or deciding student government is the administration's puppet, or other such complete nonsense, please ask us first about our opinions. i, and the rest of your soph reps, actually are here to help you out, and are on your side. feel free to come to us.
