Yesterday on my drive home from my parents' house I stopped at a gas station to get a few bottles of water for my game. The change that I received came out to be $0.34, so the lady asked me if I had a nickel. I said no, but wondered if she asked me that because she didn't have four pennies in the register to give me. Ok, maybe I'm just too tired... but that doesn't make any sense! If they owed you $.34, and you gave them a nickel, they would owe you $.39, which is still 4 pennies. If they didn't want to pass pennies back and forth, shouldn't they have asked you if you had a penny? Then they would have owed you $.35, and could have given you back a quarter and a dime. I am confused by this.

She asked me if I had a PENNY, not a nickel. Sorry for the confusion.

I think they figure most people would rather have silver change since you can use silver change in more places.
