I sing a little song. Which I got, overall, 14.5/30 on in the karaoke competition I entered it in. Better than I expected :-)
I suppose you're wondering why I've called you here today.....
Wait, that's not quite right. Let's try this again.
Well, my life has been pretty crazy for the last few months. First, let's do the backstory, for those who may not know it. I was born and raised in Columbus, OH, which is where most of my friends and family are. It's a nice city, and I like living there. But last January, I got a job offer up here in Cleveland. Great job, excellent pay, doing work that I love (playing with computers). So, naturally, I took it. Well, a couple months later they do some corporate restructuring and lay me off. So I'm stuck up in Cleveland with an apartment lease that goes for another 9 months, and no job. I take a temporary job working for a really cruddy grocery store, and then later get a better job working at a much nicer grocery store. I like it, but I'm not really going anywhere. I'm just...living, and barely making it at that.
So I was doing some job searching, applying to different places, submitting resumes, etc. But not really finding anyplace. So in December I decided to give my apartment their 3 months notice and leave in March, move back to Columbus, and try and find a better job there. I figure I can at least go back to working at Meijer, and my life will be in about the same place it is now, except I'll be making a little more money and be a lot closer to, well, everyone I know.
So a couple weeks ago I am finalizing details about when I'm going to move. I decide when my last day is gonna be, and all that. I've even had the thought of calling the National Guard Bureau and seeing if they have any long-term deployments coming up, which (not really having a permanant job) I could use to just take some time off and get away from it all for a bit. Also, build up a little bit of a bank account. So I get the phone number, and I go in to work on Monday morning to tell my boss when my last day is, and call the NGB on my lunch break and ask them.
When I go on lunch, walking down to the bank to deposit my check, I get out my phone. I have one missed call, from a totally unfamliar number, with a voicemail. So I check it.
It's [a federal agency], calling me about a possible job.
Now, way back in October or so, there was a job posting for working at the airport as a [federal job at an airport], no college required or anything. Nice, cushy federal job. So I applied on their website, and they got back to me to tell me that my application passed the requirements, and I needed to go in for more specific computerized testing. So I set up a date, and went in to take their computerized test a month or so later. Basic personality profile, english comprehension, spacial/pattern comprehension, and a nifty test of seeing how well you can identify items through an X-Ray. I passed that, and scheduled a person interview.
That happened on December 1. I went in, all day, and underwent basic physical testing (can you pick up this box and move it over here?), a personal interview, and then passing those, a complete physical, and the paperwork for a full background check. Having done the same thing for my military security clearance, I wasn't too worried. So I did all that, and they said it would take about 10 days to get the results back from the background check. If I hadn't heard from them, to give them a call. I waited two weeks, and didn't hear a thing. Tried calling them, and couldn't get through their phone system to talk to anyone. So after a month or so I completely gave up on them and pretty much forgot about them.
But now they're calling me. To offer me a job working as a [federal job] for the Cleveland-Hopkins Airport. Yeah! I was literally skipping walking back to work from the bank :-)
So, I didn't end up calling the Guard, or telling my boss when my last day was gonna be. The [federal] job is only part time (20-32 hours a week), so I'll probably continue working at Heinen's part-time to have a full work week. I am still planning on moving out of my apartment, because I really don't like it here. Fortunately, "
this apartment is really nice, about the same price I'm paying now, and literally right off the airport. So I'll probably be moving there towards the end of the month, unless I find someplace even better.
So that's what's going on in my life, currently. I still do want to move back to Columbus eventually, because of the friends/family thing. I have to work for at least 90 days before I can even request a transfer, and then there has to be a position open for me to transfer to, and the managers have to agree. So when it will actually happen, I have no idea. Maybe 4-5 months, maybe 2 years. Who knows?
And, on a completely different note, POM Pomegranate Mango juice is delicious.
Later on tonight, look for my report on Obercon. Quick summary: it was awesome :-)
