Constant knitter, sporadic poster

One of the tasks I set myself last year was to hold off on buying yarn while I knit through my stash. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be; I'd already been in the habit of curbing the impulse buying by purchasing yarn with specific projects in mind, and then (duh) knitting them. Between holiday gift socks, Oblique and Komon, and then a ( Read more... )

I think my middle-school/high-school knitters wouldn't mind the crap novelty yarns.

Ah rats, you're faster on the posting than I am. Mine would have been "the knitting/crocheting group at the SRO where I lived could use them."

However, they do get donations about twice a year from the Evil LYS in the same building (Pat's been there, she knows just how evil it is) so your middle-schoolers should take precedence.

What's an SRO? And why's the LYS Evil? (Mine's not evil. It's just got an employee who SMOKES IN THE SHOP. It's a damn shame--I was going to make serious inroads in their stock of 1824 and Jamieson's.)

SRO = Single Room Occupancy (shared showers & kitchens). The place I lived for the three years after I was in the shelters, before my Section 8 came through and I escaped to Bainbridge.

Evil because they have so much wonderful yarn that I want to buy. :)

(A smoker in a *yarn* *shop*??? [several expletives deleted] I can't imagine that. Or in a fabric store. Of course, here in WA, smoking in public places of any sort is now illegal, which means there are more places I can go...)

Ooooohhhh... that looks sooooo yummy!

As a large woman, I'm truly intimidated by the amount of material I'd need to purchase to make a garment for myself... but I really WANT to try. I was pondering perhaps a bamboo or cotton tank, but now that winter is looming, a raglan sweater could be a possibility.

Got any wisdom to share on that?

Make the kind of thing you like to wear, and make it to *fit*. I've learned the hard way, for instance, that vee-necked wool sweaters aren't a good choice for me; it's my *neck* that gets cold, while the rest of me is often overly warm, so the two lovely vee-necks I spent so much time knitting last winter go largely unworn. From here on out, I'm all about cardigans and jackets.

For fitting advice, get a copy of Big Giorl Knits or More Big Girl Knits; even if none of the patterns appeal to you, the detailed information on how to knit to your own size and shape, including a master measurement chart, is priceless ( ... )
