If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.

"Well, Touko, is it? Let me hear your Pokémon's voice again!"
Pokemon battles are competitions in which trainers misguidedly divide each other into the categories of the "weak" and the "strong." N knows this well, and does not care to find out if the Snivy that she keeps by her feet is a fledgling or a veteran - a Pokémon is only as weak as how much its trainer hinders its natural abilities. He cares not for the species that she owns (an excuse that was too often used by trainers of inferior abilities) but of how far the grass snake would go to defend his master's pride.
What else did trainers fight for?
/a question that would never be needed (wanted) to be answered/
The Purrloin leaps down from N's shoulder and launches itself at the Snivy, who snags his opponent with thick vines. He doesn't bother giving the Purrloin orders, as wild Pokémon were perfectly capable of fending for themselves. Time and time again, trainers have proved that they were the ones relying on their Pokémon, rather than the other way around.
The dark Pokemon growls at the Snivy. He can sense his trainer's (friend's) intentions, and tries to draw the battle out for as long as he can.
"Vinn, use Growth!"
That Snivy was becoming too dependent on Touko, and it showed. The Pokémon never fought for more than five minutes without taking a glance back at the girl, never trusting for a second that it could achieve victory on his own. When the grass Pokémon tackles the opponent with his head, N can see the cuts and bruises on his head. Pokémon abuse isn't a rare sight to N, but it still saddens him to see it.
N makes the mistake of following Vinn's line of sight for a moment. What he sees keeps his eyes off the battle for a few minutes - the Purrloin did not need him, after all.
Touko's eyes are never off her Snivy, not for a second. Their reactions seem almost in sync, something that N had never seen during training among the Plasma grunts. For once, N feels like his Purrloin is fighting Touko, not just her grass snake.
It is something that is startling and entrancing all at once.
Purrloin growls weakly. She must be a very good friend of yours - since you follow her so faithfully.
Oh, I don't fight for her because she's my friend, Snivy finishes his "Growth." I fight for her -
Snivys Vine Whip slams his opponent against the concrete with an air of finality.
I fight for her because she's my partner. I'm sorry that I can't say the same for you! He turns around to greet his trainer proudly. Only then does N see the grass stains and mud caking her shoes and the bruises decorating her knees. They seem fresh.
N takes his fainted friend into his arms. "I never expected your Pokémon to say such things -"
The girl only gives him a funny look with her (electric) blue eyes.
"Well, they're not supposed to say anything to us, big guy."
Do I really need to? Snivy mumbles.
N only stands flummoxed as he watches her depart with her partner. He has always been a boy of the literal word, and knowing a Pokémon's heart without verbal communication was unthinkable. But somehow, N thinks as he watches Touko leave muddy footprints along her path, he could almost bring himself to imagine it. But it is still too complex, too baffling for him to comprehend.
N has once solved a rubix cube in thirty seconds, beaten a computer at chess in thirteen moves, and reached the top of Voltorb flip in six minutes. Maybe, just maybe he can solve this enigma in time to save the world. He likes to think that this intention is entirely selfless, but the racing of his pulse betrays him.
The boy is sure to give the Purrloin a few Oran berries before releasing him. He tries not to think too much into how many other ideals he has poisoned with his pride.
None, he decides, and he is right.
For now.

A/N: Hullo and happy holidays! This is my first Pokemon fanfic, admittedly, but don't let that stop you from giving criticism where criticism is due! It has been a pleasure, writing this pairing, and I hope that I did not fail too terribly xD
