The 4400 (SPOILERS)

Jul 19, 2006 17:28

Last night I got 'round to watching the latest episode of The 4400.

Up until now, I've been really liking what they are doing...but this episode really went a bit far for my taste.

SPOILERS under the cut!!!!

First, it really annoys me that Tom has this mistaken impression that his own loved ones are not subject to the same laws as everyone else on the planet. First with his son, and now with Elana he has gone outside of the law in order to get them special treatment for CRIMINAL acts.

This annoys me.

Especially since in real life, the very agency he works for, The Department of Homeland Security, is holding hundreds of people WITHOUT CHARGES for months on end - some of whom are no doubt innocent of anything, save having an Arab name.

In the story, there are, of course, fathers, husbands and boyfriends all over the place who are distraught when HE puts their loved ones in jail. It's not shown on screen, but they nonetheless exist. There is ALWAYS someone who suffers when a person goes to jail.

So why does he feel that he should not suffer when HIS relatives fuck up?

This really annoys me - and IMO it's a reasonably accurate view of alot of our leaders in law enforcement and government. Making others suffer is not a problem for them, but they have no interest in suffering themselves by including themselves in any requirement to follow the law like the rest of us. Somehow, they are 'different'. Their family members are 'different'. Everyone else is a real criminal, but somehow, their loved one is not.

Well, fuck that shit. :(

Other than that, it was a good episode though.

I do like the character Peter Coyote is playing. He makes a good bad guy, even though he doesn't normally do so.
