Promises.

A promise can be like a window; when it is broken, all the shards of glass go outward from the one who broke it and inflict hurt on others. At other times, a promise is like a mirror; the one who breaks it wounds himself. Any scar we have left, whether it mar other's flesh or our own, is hard to lay eyes upon.
