Spam, spam, and yet more spam.

I know I don't post here very often these days, mostly because I haven't been writing much lately (though I do have a new story coming out, which will be the subject of another post!). I do try to keep the place tidy though. I don't understand why, but I'm getting more and more spam comments every day. Like 5-6/day ( Read more... )

I wish I could advise about dealing with spam. Sadly, all I can do is delete those comments when they crop up.

Disabling pingbacks? Hm... I'll need to Google that. LinksAPlenty has been getting a lot of them. After marking them as "spam" for so long, I finally got to teh point here I'm just deleting them outright; but that may cause a pingback, because I seem to be getting even more of them to delete. If there is actually a way to disable it, maybe they would, if not stop, at least slow down again. There is just so much Ugg boots spam I can tolerate, really.

Argh, now you have me thinking Ferengi, with that "all ears". I sort of follow Star Trek on FB, and they inked to someone who did a post on Star Trek puns.

The spam load seems especially odd as I have another LJ account -- a freebie, whereas this one is a permanent account -- that never gets spam *knocks on nearest wood*. I don't post there very often either.

Anyway, according to Wikipedia:

"Essentially, a pingback is an XML-RPC request (not to be confused with an ICMP ping) sent from Site A to Site B, when an author of the blog at Site A writes a post that links to Site B. However, it also requires a hyperlink. When Site B receives the notification signal, it automatically goes back to Site A checking for the existence of a live incoming link. If that link exists, the pingback is recorded successfully. This makes pingbacks less prone to spam than trackbacks. Pingback-enabled resources must either use an X-Pingback header or contain a element to the XML-RPC script ( ... )

Curiouser and curiouser. Okay, thanks. I think I'm beyond help, here, but... lol. I'll just deal with spam as it comes up. I have no idea why LinkaAPlenty is getting bombarded, especially on sedentary posts where comments are heavily moderated. Unless, of course, a pingback is recorded whenever someone visits the site. It's not just LinksAPlenty, either - I have a couple of blogger blogs, to keep things sorted. They just get random hits, though some get more than others. I wonder why they pick on M-N-O, though. Maybe because it has some of the same letters as the word "money"?

A couple of bloggers on LJ, including a couple of my ancient posts, and a couple of jongibbs, not to mention a few others, have gotten "secret crush" spam lately. The whole phenomenon is extremely odd, if they are looking for traffic, especially as they hit posts dating back to the equivalent of the Pleistocene, or something.

Well, my experiment with disabling pingbacks doesn't seem to have helped much. Maybe a little, but not much. Mostly they target older posts, but I've have several spam comments already on my latest post. No, I do not want to help you advertise your cigarettes or ugg boots :-(

I guess I'm just going to have to log in more often and delete them.
