My old bank did this to us. I never did get a straight answer from them as to why it happens that way.

I've been with Wells Fargo for over a year now and I've been very happy with their online banking.

Well, we're with (what was) Colonial. We have been very happy with them (then again, we haven't gone under until now). But they were just taken over by BB&T. A whole new set of rules and functions. I hate banks!

I hate banks. I was Bank of America since 1987 until 2006. They did the $33 overdraft fees like CANDY!!! That's the main reason we left. We are now with a Credit Union and couldn't be happier. Sure, sometimes we still overdraft, but now it's only a one time $15 fee.

((((HUGS))))

Ohhh...I may go with our local credit union. Thanks for posting that comment.

I'm in this predicament now too. Except my stupid (soon to be former) bank charged me 5 nsf fees for 3 overdrafts. Then just for good measure - because you know, $180 isn't enough to steal from me - they slapped me with another $36 fee which they called "extended overdraft". They said it was for having been overdrawn for more than 7 days. I said but it hasn't been 7 days. They said your overdrafts started on the 20th. I said But today is the 27th and I just got paid! The convo deteriorated rapidly from there and I hung up on the bastard. That was the last straw and I called an attorney as I just found out there's a class-action lawsuit against them for this same shit. Have a look at my most recent post on my LJ.

Moral of the story: NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH SUNTRUST BANK

I do remember seeing that you are joining that lawsuit. I wish you luck with that. I used to work at a bank. I generally get it...even if I don't agree with it. But this just made no sense.

I would like to join a credit union. I don't think there are too many around here and I owe money to one (from a loan for my divorce over 10 years ago) so I don't think they'd take me.

i used to have Union Bank and they would always try to screw you into overdrafting. You could cash a check first thing in the morning and then go about running errands. At the end of the day, they'd take out all the debits and then add in your check. You can imagine how quickly i switched banks.

i hope you get it all sorted out.

Oh, I know! I used to work for 5/3 bank and that's what they did. I hated trying to tell people that they were over drawn over that. Thanks!!

Banks process the higher amount debits 1st - once it tried to process the higher charge and there wasn't enough to cover you are hit for NSF...doesn't matter that there was a smaller charge that could have been covered. Sucks but thats the way it is.

No...I get that. But we should have had enough to cover the larger charge and one of the smaller charges. They charged me a 29.00 overdraft fee for a charge that didn't take us over...which in turn made the smaller one get charged too. Neither one of them should have taken us over.
