If you look past the parking garages, you can park for free alongside the curb. There's endless free spots all over Detroit.

Free parking by the theater is reserved for the buses becasue they tend to take up a lot of space. We didn't want to walk very far so we parked in one of the lots.

Anytime after six on the weekends you can park by the meters anywhere for free. I misremember what the time on weeknights are but it's not much later. All you have to do is walk the rest of the way.

And, yes, I'm talking about parallel parking, but we parked on Michigan Avenue, which was sparsely populated with motorcars, so all we had to do was drive right into place. It's far better than being raped for $5 or $8 or $10.
