WRITING MEME! from tumblr! it's supposed to be one of those things where people ask you ONE of them in your ask box, but nobody ever puts anything in my ask box, so i'm going to do ALL of them! obnoxious! but right now i can't think about anything but writing. and not studying for my midterm tomorrow.
1.Can you summarize your story in one sentence?
"i come from a long line of bankers."
AHAHAHAHA J/K. ummmmm. it's about loving, leaving, and maybe being left behind.
2.What is your preferred genre to write in?
it's this weird mix between chick lit and literary fiction.
3.What subjects are you most comfortable writing about?
looooooooooooooove. friendship, family, identity, how people talk to each other, how people think differently from one another and how they try to get along anyway.
4.What subjects are you least comfortable writing about?
SEX AND VIOLENCE. i also have NO interest WHATSOEVER in anything supernatural, fantasy, sci-fi, or historical. SORRY!
5.Have you ever written fanfiction? About what?
oh yeah. um, the big phase, which i was actually shamefully quite popular for, was gravitation. i also wrote a bit of high school musical. also nuke. now i hang out in a disney community and have written about twenty pieces for it in one year which for me is CRAZY! it really got me writing again! :D
6.What is something that you’re ashamed about regarding your writing?
i'm still guilty of this sometimes, but especially before, i'd be so sure that everything had to end PERFECTLY. everyone always got engaged or married or pregnant and so HAPPY. i hate that now. i like ambiguous endings. hopeful endings for sure, but not perfect. also i used to use SUCH flowery language. everything had to sparkle with me.
7.What sources do you draw inspiration from?
everywhere, man! people i knew briefly, people i've passed on the street, newspaper articles, songs, mainly just observing people and how they interact with others and themselves. if i've laid eyes on you, i'm fascinated by you.
8.Do you try to emulate any other authors’ writing styles?
i don't think i've TRIED to, but it happens very often! usually my writing is exactly like what i've most recently read. when i first started serious-writing, it was meg cabot and sarah dessen. my favourite gravitation author. i've noticed myself trying to be like hemingway, sylvia plath, and especially, HOLY GEEZ, my favourite author, miriam toews.
9.As a writer, what is your ultimate goal?
not much, but i'd love to publish my novel. the thing is, though, once you publish one they want you to write more. and i'm just so in love with these guys and their story, i can hardly think of anything else!
10.Do you ever self-censor your writing? Why?
i used to, absolutely. i used to be a prude. now, no, not at all. unless there are people around who i think might pick it up and read it. like sometimes i'll write f--- or something like that so not to offend anyone. but really, i still said it. :p
11.QUICK. Ship two of your characters in a humorous fashion.
OMG. AARON AND VALERIE FOREVER. he deems her "a carver" in one of his philosophy classes and tries to seduce her. he accidentally calls her carver and she's like WTF LIKE MY SISTER?!
12.What do you struggle with most in the mechanical side of writing?
ummm. dialogue? i think i'm pretty good with the mechanics, actually, but i'm always striving for more realistic dialogue.
13.What are your strong points mechanically?
i'm good with creating and maintaining a rhythm. that's something i'm very serious about. also keeping a certain mood or tone, and just like RIPPING PEOPLE'S HEARTS OUT. i am very serious about that.
14.Are there any words that you’re aware of overusing?
SPARKLE, SHINE, GLOW, ETC
15.Do you create characters/situations in your story that are meant to address issues in the real world in some fashion?
that is a good question! not REALLY, unless you count broad themes like figuring out who you are and everyone is different and special and stuff like that.
16.QUICK x2. Write something at least 300 words long.
later.
17.Do you feel favoritism towards particular characters in your story?
YES. AHAHAHAHAHAHA. omg. like aaron. he has i think THREE scenes in the whole thing (though he will have a ton more in the second draft) and i thought he was so pathetic and adorable and all of a sudden i was just writing about him like ALL THE TIME! and then i started shipping him with EVERYONE. truly i'm obsessed with all of my characters, especially my golden trio, but for a while there, aaron was like MY MAIN MAN.
18.Have you ever taken a class on creative writing?
i...don't think...i have. I SHOULD REMEDY THIS IMMEDIATELY.
19.What is something that you hate to see other authors do in their writing?
i am so, so tired of the sarcastic first-person narrator who is so much smarter than everyone else in the story and has everything all figured out and has a witty comment for EVERYTHING. i don't know anyone like that in real life. there's a girl i know who is great with words, she is bright and engaging when she's talking about nothing, but once you get on a real topic, she just kind of stares at you. she doesn't understand. and yet she's one of the most interesting people i know! NOBODY IS ALWAYS SMART AND WITTY AND MAKES SUPER-KEEN OBSERVATIONS. that's why i like carver so much. she doesn't understand ANYTHING.
20.What’s your favorite piece of literature?
oh my gosh. i might have to say a short story i read called "bread." i don't remember the name of the author -- i can't go get my print-out because it's upstairs and my internet is on a timer, it turns off in ten minutes. but it's less than a page long and it has SO. MUCH. FEELING. it's incredible.
