Day Eight: Mirrors (2008) US

Mirrors is a French-produced American-made remake of an Asian horror movie.

Jack Bauer Ben Carson is an ex-cop that is now making his living as a security guard at a partially burned department store. That just happened to be built on the remains of a mental hospital. (Seriously! If you abandon your mental hospital, invite a priest in and then burn it to the ground!) The mirrors are possessed by a demon that used to live in Anna Esseker, a little girl who was a patient at the hospital. Her psychiatrist managed to pull the demon out of Anna and save her. As a result, the demon caused the other patients to kill each other and the staff. (Seriously! Priest then arson then another priest!) The mirrors demand that Carson find Esseker and bring her back to them or else they'll kill his family one by one starting with a naked Amy Smart.

This movie started off really good. There's something in the mirror that wants to kill you and you can't hide because mirrors are everywhere. Good solid premise.

Then it just kept getting more and more convoluted. There are ghosts from when the department store was burned down. And ghosts from when it was a mental hospital. And demons from when it was a mental hospital and the demon wants a nun.

It's like the writer just wanted to throw in everything that even remotely scares him. I don't know if the South Korean version did the same thing, but it was kinda ridiculous. And ultimately made it not scary at all.
