Sometimes the propagation is intentional

I potted up several plants today. A straggling pineapple sage that was meant to be in a pot outside (said pot bought just for that purpose). I brought it in to resuscitate it and ever since it's been living on a kitchen windowsill with only indirect light, the poor baby ( Read more... )

I planted some succulents in a part of the garden earlier this year, in coconut-fiber shells in hanger thingies, and they were either getting too much sun or draining too much or both. I just moved them into the rock wall near the garage steps and gave them new soil and they are SO MUCH happier. One of them has doubled in size in a month, it seems. Others are sending out new shoots when they didn't before. One is perking up where it was always limp before. Given I have so little talent with plants, this makes me very happy.

Yay! That rock wall should be a good place for them. :)

One warning about succulents - if they grow super dooper rapidly they can get unhappy also, attracting pests or gettingfungal diseases. Like all plants they have their own bell curve for what's Just Right. But it sounds like you are doing an excellent job of plotting that curve for the conditions in your yard, which is precisely how one develops talent. :)

You guys have some lovely succulents. I was covetous of several of them, but it's probably a good thing I never got any cuttings since they would have been abandoned when I moved. (My lipstick plant that's from your plant is at my mom's house. I hope to reclaim it someday soon.)

We haven't done much with the older succulents you remember -- although the one with all the tightly packed rosettes had a scare during our recent heatwave, but it seems to be recovering now that it's in a shadier spot. These are newer ones I got this year that just weren't happy. One of them is mega-growing in a way that might be worrisome but the rest are just perkier and sending out tentative new shoots, so I'm not too worried. :)
