5 foods I like that you might not

Nov 12, 2014 06:00

1) Pickled herring.
2) Liverwurst.
3) Sardines. And anchovies.
4) Leftover sushi, or chinese/indian/ethiopian food for breakfast. Cold.
5) 85% dark chocolate.

Are any of these on your love/hate list? Do you have food preferences other people might think are strange? Curious minds want to know. :)

I eat all those things, plus:

Octopus from the can.
Random items from the local Korean grocery including all the deep fried tiny fish.
Caviar.
Really, I am an opportunivore. I eat what is edible.

Except sea cucumber. Yecch.

There were dried tiny fish in that amazing snack mix you used to bring me from Thailand. I liked them. I will have to check the local Asian market to see if they have similar things.

I've had fresh octopus but never from a can. Is there a notable difference in taste/texture between the two? Eating octopus always makes me feel guilty, because they are quite intelligent creatures. :/

Caviar is yummy but I can't afford it. As far as I know I've never tried sea cucumber, though it could have appeared in sushi and I don't remember.

I like those as well, except for #2.

I also enjoy uni and mochi-several friends of mine find either of those rather squicky. Oh! And I also like the tiny crispy fish mentioned above-I see 'em a lot in Southeast Asian dishes, as well as Korean cuisine (yay banchan!). And shrimp chips.

I need to try out fresh durian, because I've liked dishes made with the fruit (pastries, cookies, ice cream).

I've taken a durian home and tried it. Honestly, I couldn't quite take it straight, but it made for a pretty good smoothie. I would have it again if it were prepared that way.

I've described the taste of the fresh stuff as "mango, pineapple, fried chicken, overcooked eggs."

Whole nations swear by it, though, so who am I to say.

I can't quite handle uni, though I think if I tried it enough times I could acclimate to it. I have the same trouble with it I have with truffles - there's something a bit too earthy/musty about them.

Mochi is delicious. I'm not sure if I've had shrimp chips.

Oh, I love truffles, of both the fungal and chocolate varieties. Although, yes, the former are quite strong, so it's easy to overdo them in a dish.

I should send you some shrimp chips. :)

1) Pickled herring.
Tried it a few times, would eat again in theory, but won't go out of my way to buy it.

2) Liverwurst.
This used to be the go-to "travel food," until the time the cooler wasn't cold enough and I got sick on it.

3) Sardines. And anchovies.
Definitely anchovies. Nowadays sardines only if they are fresh.

4) Leftover sushi, or chinese/indian/ethiopian food for breakfast. Cold.
No such thing as leftover sushi. No idea what you are talking about. Whole concept is weird and disturbing.
As for cold Chinese food, on rare occasion. Ya got to be careful about eating unheated leftovers, though.

5) 85% dark chocolate.
Honey, I eat 100% dark chocolate (when I can). http://amzn.com/B000U0LVN0
Failing that, they make a stellar 87% bar with barely any sugar. http://amzn.com/B004NSH6KC

Incidentally, I've had excellent (fresh, raw) sardine sushi in Capitola.

I adore pickled herring. I blame it on living in the Netherlands as a toddler. Apparently I would eat entire bowls of it if they were left in my reach. My Dad told me that I also loved the dried fish they sell as snack food along the beach. He said I would happily gnaw one of them. I guess it's sorta like fish jerky? I wish I had any memories of being there, but what I've got is a love of pickled herring ( ... )

I love pickled herring and liverwurst. I like roast chicken cold, and pizza, but not the things you mentioned.

Also, we get tiny dried fish flavored with sugar and sesame from Asian stores here. Can send you some if you want. :)

I read the comments here and you have eat a lot of things I haven't tried, like tripe and uni. But when it comes to caviar I have eaten Vendace roe (Edit: better wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalix_L%C3%B6jrom), one time, on tost a new years eve. And that was good.

Liverwust sounds like something I could like, I like chicken liver. Sardines are great. And otherwise, do you have the same problem with sushi in America that I have with "our" sushi, namely in premade sushi almost all pieces are salmon? Salmon is like my least favorite sushi.
