Nice things people shared with me recently, books, The Idiot, and gardening

A young man got a job offer while waiting in line to be cashed out.  A mechanical engineer, he'd been let go from his previous job under circumstances that left a bad taste in his mouth.  I found out the good news when he called a friend while within earshot ( Read more... )

I'm glad about the nice people and the nice things they share with you. :)

So the saga with the Idiot continues... *hugs*

Wow, six hours of weeding! How did you get so many weeds?

Awww, thanks.
I got so many weeds because last year, I did almost no gardening. I couldn't, and do the kitchen remodel. Only so much of me to go around. I took a deep breath, reconciled myself to what it might mean for this year, and focused on the task at hand.
As I've already noted, I gained something in the process: self-seeded plants which I probably otherwise would have weeded out.

Ouch!

What is that "hand tool" of yours like? We either dug out the weeds with this kind of tool in the photo (I think it's not exactly what you would call a hoe in the English-speaking world, but there is no better translation) or plucked them by hand wherever they had to be dealt with individully in my grandparents' yard.

What kind of self-seeded plants do you have? If those include tomatoes, I can only hope you don't have the right weather conditions for rust this year because for some reason self-seeded tomato plants tend to be more vulnerable to it, and then the rest contract it from them.

The hand tool is about a foot long, rubbery handle, with a metal blade almost like a very heavy screwdriver, but it's got a v-shape cast in it, so it'll go to either side of a root. Particularly handy when taking out Queen Anne's lace, or wild carrot. Also great on dandelions.
The self-seeded things I found so far are perennial geraniums and a tiny mulberry tree.

better to call the cops and get it documented in case he chooses to repeatedly disregard noise ordinance laws.
