how interesting. and frustrating.

do you find yourself taking part in these "discussions" because of the cultural influence or staying neutral in hopes people will catch on to your example?
more simply stated, what i'm asking is: what do you do when people try to engage you in this gossip or "leisurely conversation"?

They don't, because generally I'm viewed as not at all a part of their society. Nor would I have anything to contribute. So even if I'm there while it's going on, they make no effort to include me in these. Probably for the better, not that I could change it at all "leading by example"

I think in most group-oriented [using your second definition] societies there are always issues with the "Other", no matter how pleasant they might appear to be to us, the outsider.
