OMG I forgot to mention my favorite moment in the Hobbit movie--when Galadriel's tenderly brushing back a lock of Gandalf's hair and telling him not to be afraid, it looks for a moment like she's going to stick her finger in his nose. That would do it, I think.

I had wildly mixed feelings about The Hobbit. On the one hand, Martin Freeman was great, and Thorin was hot. On the other hand, Radagast was AWFUL and so was the "comic" final line in the goblin king's death scene, and basically everything else that was added in for cheap laughs. It reminded me that the only thing I *didn't* like about the LOTR movies was the way they handled Gimli, the dwarf-tossing jokes etc. -- it's *such* a false note, stupid and cheap and wrong, especially showing up in what is otherwise an amazingly rich and powerful and engrossing fictional world. Well, it seems like in The Hobbit they really amped up the Gimli factor, as it were ( ... )

Yeah, Radagast was disappointing, and also a spoofy clone of the T.H. White Merlin, down to the bird shit in his hair.

I liked that they mostly didn't do that stuff to the dwarves in this movie (and I can't tell you how much I appreciated seeing what read as big hulking fat people stomping around kicking ass and being dexterous), although I guess they did transfer it to other people instead, like the goblin king. I was severely disturbed by the way he didn't bleed--major depersonalization, even though he does get a bunch of smartass lines. Part of what interested me about the Russian illustrations was that the goblins look completely human in them--you can only tell they're goblins from context.

I thought it must be an Irish elk, because elves are conservationists.

And aww, just read it and she's so mean! I don't understand why people keep complaining that it tied into LoTR too much--it is LoTR, just earlier. I agree about the nested flashbacks though.

Oh, I read it as mostly teasing, although I see how it could come off as mean.

I laughed at her write-up of the Thorin bits. "I am so handsome at you right now, Gandalf."
