- What sort of profession in the wizarding world would you choose and why?
I would like to do something within Muggle Relations. In the books I’m always fascinated by how the wizarding world stays hidden. I like the charms put on Hogwarts and the Quidditch World Cup to keep Muggles from finding them. Even places like Platform 9 3/4 and St. Mungo’s are right under their noses, but they don’t even notice people disappearing through walls.
- If you could teach one class at Hogwarts, what would it be and why?
I would teach Ancient Runes. Although it is not mentioned often in canon, it reminds me a lot of studying Latin, where ancient texts are translated and interpreted. I majored in Classics (and Journalism) in college, and part of me has always wanted to teach Latin. Also, I think Ancient Runes is a great way to see how magic was in the past.
- This year, The TriWizard Tournament is being held once again and you're of age. Do you put your name in the Goblet? Why or why not?
I don’t think so. I don’t like being in the spotlight like that, representing my entire school. I never wanted to be in a school play or anything like that for the same reason, and having solos when I was in band always freaked me out. In situations like that I’m afraid that I’ll screw up and embarrass myself.
- If you could choose your animagus form, what would it be and why?
I would be a bird, a smaller one like a sparrow. I love being on airplanes and looking at everything below me. When I’m bored, I go onto Google Earth and look at satellite pictures from all over the world. Being a bird would give me an even better view. Plus it would be a much more enjoyable commute to work.
- What HP character do you identify with most and why?
Hermione. I am very passionate about causes that I feel strongly about. I always try to do the right thing and follow the rules, but I'm not afraid to bend the rules if I feel like it is necessary. Only bend though, I really don't like break the rules.
Also, Hermione's boggart is failure, in the form of McGonagall telling her she failed all her classes. Although my boggart would be different, I am also afraid of failure, especially when it came to my academics. I didn't spend hours upon hours studying like Hermione does, but I did want to do my best.
- What would you see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised?
I would see myself wearing a ring that I lost a few months ago. It’s a white gold ring with an opal (my birthstone), tanzanite, and diamond shards that my parents gave me for my 21st birthday. That rings means a lot to me and it’s something my parents gave me to have forever, and I have no idea where it is. Sometimes I reach for my ring finger thinking it’s there, but it’s not. Right now my deepest desire is to find that ring and to be able to wear it again. I love that ring and I really hope that I find it.
- If you won a million dollars, how would you spend it?
First, I would pay off my debt, my brother’s debt, and my parents’ debt. Then I would go back to school and study to be a translator, all the way up to a master’s degree in languages or something like International Relations. Then I would travel the world to apply the languages I learned. After that, I would move to Boston and use the rest of it as a down payment on a beautiful brownstone in the Back Bay and work as a translator in the city.
- What was your ideal job as a kid? Has that changed? What is your ideal job now?
I remember in second grade once saying that I wanted to be a waitress because that’s what my mom was at the time. All the other girls wanted to be dancers, actresses, and teachers. I also wanted to be a veterinarian because I loved animals, and a writer because I loved to write.
Now, I really want to be a translator. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that is what I want to do until my final semester of college. I only had one more class to take for my major, so I took two language classes I always wanted to study: Italian and Japanese. I hope someday to be fluent in many languages as a translator. That means I’ll have to go back to school at some point, even if it’s just night classes.
- If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it, and what would you call it?
I would love to invent a spell, potion, or charm that would give me a great singing voice. I’ve always admired people who have great singing voices, especially opera singers. Unfortunately, I can’t sing well at all.
I don’t really know what I would use it for, exactly. Like I said in the TriWizard Tournament question, I don’t like the spotlight. However, if my voice became so great and I never screwed up I would love to be a performer.
I think this would work best as a potion, and it would be called Draught of the Aria.
- If you were to face a boggart, what would it turn into? And what does it turn into when you throw the counter-spell, Riddikulus?
My boggart would be a set of stairs. I have an awful fear of falling, be it on ice or out of my bed, but mostly it is of falling down stairs. I’m afraid of hurting myself badly, or even worse breaking my neck. I still use the handrail while using stairs because I’m terrified of falling down them. I don’t know where this fear came from and I hate it.
When using Riddikulus the stairs would turn into one of those bouncy carnival rides. Those are always fun, no matter how old you are.
- What do you look for in a friend?
I look for someone who is loyal because I don’t want a friend who would backstab me. Also, I want a friend who is intelligent, so that we can have conversations about all sorts of subjects, from politics to fashion to sports. I look for someone I can call whenever to talk about anything, or even nothing at all.
- What trait most annoys you about other people?
Rudeness annoys me the most. After working several years in both the retail and restaurant businesses, I’ve had my share of rude people. As much as I love reading stories on customers_suck, they also make me mad that some people believe it is okay to treat others like inferiors and that the world revolves around them.
- What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?
Intelligence - I always did well in school and I really miss it. I love trivia on any subject. My father makes these massive trivia games with some pretty tough questions and I have so much fun doing them, even if I do only get 20 out of 100 right. I've been watching Jeopardy almost every night for as long as I can remember.
Hard working - My parents taught me to work hard at everything that I do. I have always been praised by employers and teachers about how I work very hard, and I'm proud of that. I don't like the idea of being thought of as a slacker.
Honest - I'm not a big fan of lying or deceiving, and I'm not good at it either. I think lying just makes situations worse. I'm not big on breaking the rules, mostly because I'm afraid of getting in trouble. Whenever there are regulations (dress codes, codes of conduct, etc.) I always try to follow them. I think it creates a good impression on others.
Reliability - If you ask me to do something, I'll do it. I hate disappointing people and letting others down. I had a lot of leadership roles in high school and college and those taught me a lot about reliability. No one wants a leader who is going to drop the ball. I'm not reliable at home though, as I've been slacking off big time with chores and stuff. That's different though.
Humble - I'm modest. I don’t like to exaggerate about myself because I don’t want to let people down or give them the wrong impression of myself. Filling out applications like this is tough for me because I don’t like to talk about myself.
- What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?
Show off/Know-it-all - I’m usually humble with people I don’t know, but with my friends, and acquaintances I'm comfortable with, I can often be quite the
know-it-all. I show off in situations where people will be talking about something
and I'll butt in with, "Well, did you know blah blah blah..." I hate that I do this, but it's my way of getting attention from my friends. For example in the GoF movie, remember the scene when Fred and George used the aging spell to try to put their names in the goblet and Hermoine says, "It's not going to wo-ork," and went on and on like the know-it-all she can be? I do stuff like that sometimes.
Shyness - I am nowhere near as shy as I used to be. In high school I barely spoke up in class and barely talked to anyone except for my friends. This gave some people the impression that I was a snob, which I'm not. I was always afraid of making a fool out of myself, I think. Finally in college I started speaking up in classes and became more outgoing, but I'm still on the shy side. I don't like being in the center of attention either.
Selfishness - I'll be the first to admit that I'm selfish. I'm the oldest and the only girl in my family (I have two brothers) and I'm sort of used to getting my way. I don't like to do housework, I want to watch TV when I want to and use the computer when I want to. I'm getting better though now that I've moved home, but that's because I'm afraid of my father yelling at me.
Procrastination - I'm usually a hard worker, but when I know I can get away with slacking off, I slack off big time. As much as I'd like to accomplish things early, I rarely ever do. Many times in high school and college I stayed up late finishing papers. Also, a lot of times in college I found myself trying to finish up my homework right before the class started. Sure doing things in advance pays off in the long run, but it so hard not to put things off when you know you can.
Short temper - I can get frustrated very easily, especially when I'm driving or playing video games. Going back to how I'm selfish, I don't like it when things don't go my way, and when I don't I quickly get mad or frustrated. I often bottle it in, putting me in a bad mood for a while until I can vent.
