- What sort of profession in the Wizarding world would you choose and why?
I would most likely be a Healer at St. Mungo’s. I have a deep fascination for Herbology and herbal magic and potions, so my specialty would be in the Potion and Plant Poisoning floor. I have a strange need to help everyone I can but can remain unattached enough to think logically in crisis situations. As it is, I plan on becoming a doctor, so a Healer makes sense.
If I wasn’t to go into healing, I think my next choice would be a researcher or teacher. My favorite Hogwarts’ subjects are Herbology and Potions, so I’d probably go into research in one of those areas. These two areas are logical and exact, leaving little room for blatant failure. Even though most people find them boring or overly analytical, both areas leave room for abstract thought and out-of-the-box reasoning, as many potions need to be altered due to a patient’s specific needs and allergies. Potions are constantly being developed upon, so the job would never get boring. Boredom happens to be the very bane of my existence.
- If you could teach one class at Hogwarts, what would it be and why?
Definitely not Transfiguration or Charms, as there’s too much practical application there and not enough theory. While I adore Astronomy and Divination, neither class seems very useful in the long run and my students wouldn’t be getting anything concrete from their studies. History of Magic would be kind of cool, but that’s just too much theory and I’m not one for extremes.
Most likely Herbology. While Potions is definitely my more favored of the two, Herbology requires less mathematics, which I’m very good at but horrible at teaching. Herbology requires theory and practice, but more theory than practice because you must know which plants go with which and how to grow these plants without adverse affects. I wouldn’t trust myself caring for animals, but I’ve always been good with plants. Teaching others the magical properties of Belladonna root and Cloves all day sounds wonderful to me, no matter how boring others may find it.
- This year, The TriWizard Tournament is being held once again and you're of age. Do you put your name in the Goblet? Why or why not?
This is a hard one. While I love adventure and I’m not overly afraid of the fact I may end up dead, eternal fame and glory is not one of those things I look forward to. I don’t like being the center of attention unless I’ve earned it, and winning at a game of chance is not my idea of earning something.
However, if I don’t enter, I’d probably deal with the “what if?” question for the rest of my life. In truth, I’d rather die in the competition than never try for it at all. So yeah, I’d enter my name in the Goblet, but probably not until the last possible minute.
- If you could choose your animagus form, what would it be and why?
Oh…hard question.
Probably a fox. According to many sources, (yeah, I did my research for this questionnaire, it’s Easter and I’m bored) foxes stand for providing, cunning, and intelligence as well as feminine magic and twilight. I’m very overprotective of my friends and delight in doing things for them, from lying to a teacher to rewriting their term paper for them the night before it’s due. Cunning I’m not so good at, while I can usually outsmart others, it’s mostly due to my combination of logical and abstract thinking processes and has nothing to do with being quick on my toes. However, I’m third in my class at the moment and heavily sarcastic, so intelligence is probably a plus for me in regards to the fox. I am, in case it’s not clear, female, so that’s where the feminine magic comes in, and I’m a night-owl through and through, so I can relate to the fox being a twilight creature.
- What HP character do you identify with most and why?Hermione, hands down. I’m really a know-it-all through-and-through and I don’t like to be proven wrong. While I was torn between relating to Hermione or McGonagall until the third book, the moment Hermione’s boggart turned out to be failure I knew I met my pen-and-paper twin. I know what it’s like to be laughed at and teased as Hermione was in the first book, as I’ve often been the butt of others’ jokes. However, I’ve stood up to myself both verbally and physically, as Hermione has, and I’ve made some great friends along the way. Most of my friends are guys, as I’m more of a adventure and mud sort-of girl than make-up and dresses. I like to prove myself and have a constant need to show the world that I can handle everything they’ve thrown at me.
“We could all have been killed - or worse, expelled. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to bed."-yeah, we’re definitely soul mates.
- What would you see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised?A Valedictorian tassel and an acceptance letter to a prestigious university. I’ve worked extremely hard since sixth grade to stay at the top of my studies, but since the beginning of this year I’ve been slipping-up. I am absolutely terrified that all my hard work will have been for naught and I need tangible proof that it all means something. I have just about everything else I could ever want, loving parents, a great little brother, and amazing friends. Knowing that I’m successful and having the means to prove it is probably what I desire most.
- If you won a million dollars, how would you spend it?I’d buy my parents a new house first, as they’ve been wanting to move since I was in elementary school and only stayed in this town for me. Then I’d attend all those summer camps I’ve been wanting-badly-to attend but have declined my parents’ invitation to go because I don’t want them wasting the money on me. By now I’d be down to about 300,000 dollars, so a shopping spree to Barnes and Noble is definitely in order-I’d buy all the classics I don’t have as of yet and then a bunch of trashy teen novels because, hell, I am still a kid. Then there’d be new clothes to buy, as I absolutely hate when my parents buy me clothes and often put-off buying them until the absolute last minute. A few trinkets for my family and friends would also be in order, and tutoring sessions for my little brother. With the remaining 50,000 dollars or so, I’d give donations to charity because, in the end, I really do hate watching people suffer (no matter how enjoyable I may find watching it at times.)
- What was your ideal job as a kid? Has that changed? What is your ideal job now?
When I was younger, five-nine-ish, I wanted desperately to become an actress. I thought it was so cool, how they could play a million different parts and pretend to be a million different people. Alas, memorization is not in my blood and I always stumble over words when reading aloud, so that job just isn’t for me.
Now days, I want desperately to become either a writer or a doctor. The doctor is the more practical dream, as my parents would absolutely hate me if I decided to ‘waste m intelligence’ on majoring in English. I really do have a deep appreciation for the written word though and I write large amounts of fanfiction and original fiction in my spare time. I wanted to be an engineer for some time, like Dagny Taggert in Atlas Shrugged though, not the modern ones that have such boring jobs. Writing would give me the chance to be every job I want to be, but it’s not socially acceptable to my parents, teachers, or family.
- If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it, and what would you call it? Oh, I’d love to invent a potion that could create an immunity to the Crucio. It’s all well and good that Harry Potter can throw off the painful curse, but not everyone in the Wizarding world has his aptitude for mind magic or his willpower. Knowing that the Longbottoms were driven insane by it is enough to make me want to end the use of such an Unforgivable, but I can’t very well prevent everyone from using it. My potion would be a sort of vaccination against the curse, given at birth. There are other ways, of course, of causing pain, but I think such a potion would help overall, don’t you?
- If you were to face a boggart, what would it turn into? And what does it turn into when you throw the counter-spell, Riddikulus? While I’m terrified of failing myself, failing my parents would be that much worse. My boggart would most likely be both my parents shaking their heads at me and saying, “We disown you, Nicole, because you are a complete failure in our eyes.” Riddikulus would morph my parents into one person-in looks alone-because, really, the two of them combined would be absolutely hilarious.
- What do you look for in a friend? Most of my friends are pretty diverse, but there are some underlying principles that keep my friends my friends. I love sarcasm and witticisms, so if they can keep up with my insults and sarcastic remarks, they’re definitely in. Some semblance of intelligence, book-smart or street-smart, is a must, because I hate dealing with idiots. A sense of daring and rebellion is much appreciated, because even if I appear to be a goody-two-shoes at times, I don’t like most forms of authority and have been yelled at more than once for getting “cheeky” with a teacher. I don’t care what their background is, as long as they’re slightly open-minded and don’t take offense easily, because I can be quite cruel in my insults at times and I’m far from conventional in terms of dress and personality. In short, uniqueness is a must.
- What trait most annoys you about other people?I can’t stand pushovers. People who allow others to take advantage of them should not be allowed to exist. There’s a difference between being loyal and following blindly, and the moment someone crosses that line I don’t want anything to do with them. I value loyalty and I like people who are willing to do things for others, but if you don’t have a backbone don’t even bother approaching me.
- What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?
1. Intelligence, both book-smart and street-smart because I can rattle off information faster than most and soak up my studies like a sponge but I also know how to act around others and blend in.
2. Sarcasm, because it sustains me. When I was younger I was teased often, so I quickly became defensive and sarcasm became my default defense mechanism. I have a very dry, cynical sense of humor, and while others may find this a weakness, I view it as a strength.
3. Empathy. I don’t believe in sympathy or pity because I won’t accept it from anyone so no one should accept it from me. But I can relate to people in most situations and I understand people’s unique sufferings without having to have gone through them myself.
4. Independence. I’m not used to relying on people and often try to do things myself. I don’t like groups projects and even when assigned to work with a group I usually take-on most of the workload so I know things will turn-out the way I want them to. I don’t need others to up my ego or protect me, as I’m confident enough and I can fight my own battles.
5. Uniqueness. I don’t follow trends and I don’t care what’s popular. My favorite music was first written twenty years ago and my clothes don’t come from Abercrombie and Fitch or Hollister. My hair isn’t pin-straight and I don’t wear my clothes to impress the guys. I won’t agree with the crowd if I don’t think they’re right and people have come to accept me for who I am, not who I pretend to be.
- What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?
1. I don’t trust easily. People have betrayed me before and I’m not one to make the same mistake twice. My friends are always held at arm’s length until they’ve proven themselves to me and I know they won’t hurt me too much. This lack of trust follows through into my school work and my social life. I don’t like letting others do things for me because I’m afraid of being in their debt and I hate when my friends want me to trust them-I can’t.
2. I’m defensive to a fault. The slightest joint sets my nerves on edge and I snap at people for things others wouldn’t even blink at. People are often afraid of me and walk on eggshells around me, causing me to feel bad after I’ve snapped at them. While my friends have gotten used to it, it’s difficult to make new friends with this trait.
3. Insecurity. I’m always trying to prove myself to the world, even though I’m told time and time again I have nothing to prove. My thirst to show the world I’m good enough often leads to me screwing up miserably and failing, which is always a problem.
4. Caring too much. I usually pretend that I don’t care whether people live or die, but the moment one of my friends is in trouble I’m the first by their side to fight off enemies I know I can’t handle. I’m overprotective and people often find this bothersome. It’s…difficult.
5. I’m antisocial. I don’t go out Friday night and I like to read more than I like to party. I have friends and I do hang out with them, but I usually tell them to go off with each other than bother with me. I don’t mind being left on the sidelines while my friends play soccer and I’d rather eat ice cream alone than with someone else. I don’t mind, usually, but sometimes I get lonely.
