Sort me!

  • What sort of profession in the wizarding world would you choose and why?
I would like to be a psychotherapist working with spirits. Just look at all the potential clients. Professor Binns really needs to let go of the past, Peeves is obviously overcompensating for something, and let’s not even get started on Nearly Headless Nick… I would love to pick them all apart and analyze them. It seems like a career that would offer a lot of variety and amusement (not that I wouldn't take my clients seriously). Unfortunately, spirits don’t have money or health insurance, but maybe the people they haunt would pay for their treatment in hopes of getting rid of them.

  • If you could teach one class at Hogwarts, what would it be and why?
I would teach either Divination or Potions. Divination because I’m psychically inclined-I sometimes have prophetic dreams-and I’ve been drawn to various divination tools, like tarot and runes, since I was about ten years old. I own about dozen different tarot and oracle decks. I'm intrigued by the mystery of seeing the future. Divination can be useful, too, because if you know what's coming, you can prepare for it, or perhaps even prevent it.

Potions would be fun because it’s the magical equivalent of chemistry. In chemistry lab, I always loved how a solution can change color, etc., instantly when you add just one more drop of something else. Add magical properties to that and you probably couldn’t drag me away. I can see myself experimenting, trying to develop new potions or improve the ones that already exist.

  • This year, The TriWizard Tournament is being held once again and you're of age. Do you put your name in the Goblet? Why or why not?
No, I would not put my name in the Goblet because I'd probably die. I’m not strong physically, tiny as I am, and don’t have very good coordination. I do enjoy competition, just not of the physical sort.

  • If you could choose your animagus form, what would it be and why?
I’d be a fox. This clever trickster has always been one of my favorite characters in folktales, and when it comes to getting what I want, I can be just as cunning, manipulative, and resourceful. I've considered answering this question with the wolf, my favorite animal, but I don't think I would fit into a wolf pack. I don't have the patience to be a leader, nor would I be content to just follow. I'm an independent at heart. The wolf is also associated with wisdom and seen as a teacher. While I've been told that I'm wise for my age since I was very young, I'm not a good teacher, nor do I have any real desire to teach. The fox suits me better, I think.

  • What HP character do you identify with most and why?
Although not quite as eccentric, I identify the most with Luna Lovegood because, although she is intelligent, she still believes in nonsense such as nargles based on faith alone. After some thought, I realized that I’m not much different. I’m well educated, but I still believe that ghosts and possibly even other magical beings exist.

I also identify a lot with Sirius Black. He is my favorite character in the books, for many reasons, but particularly because he was the only adult in the book who actually treated Harry as an equal. Harry had been through a lot by by OoTP, and he deserved to know the truth and to participate in the Order, etc. I hate it when people keep things from others because they think the truth will hurt or be a burden or some other nonsense. Sirius tells it like it is, and so do I. We both act on impulse, reckless and are young at heart (I'm not old, but I act more like a teenager than a 25 year old). I've also been known to cause some mischief on occasion.

  • What would you see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised?
Right now, I'd probably see my dog, who died a few days ago, because I can’t deal with the fact that he’s gone. At any other time, I’d see myself having enough money so that I could do whatever I want, whenever I want, and be able to pursue my gazillion hobbies without having to worry about earning a living. I could indulge in spending sprees without having to worry about being able to afford it.

  • If you won a million dollars, how would you spend it?
After paying off my debt, I would go on a shopping spree. Then I'd donate some to my favorite animal/wildlife charities and invest the rest. I’d probably divide it into low-risk and medium/high risk investments so that some of it would be safe, while the rest would have the potential of gaining value over the short-term.

  • What was your ideal job as a kid? Has that changed? What is your ideal job now? When I was little I wanted nothing more than to be a famous singer. That wish has changed, because I hated my voice as soon as I heard a recording of myself singing. I'm at a difficult point in my career/education right now. I just dropped out of grad school just after getting my master’s degree. The plan was to get a PhD and become a professor of Germanic Studies, but with every class I took in grad school, I realized that I really don’t want to spend the rest of my life talking about dead authors and “serious” literature and not even get paid well for it. To be a good and well-respected professor, you need to really love what you do, and I was already starting to hate it. This kind of change is very difficult for me because I feel like I'm going backward, and I always want to go forward, but it must be done. I’m going back to school in January to get a degree in accounting because there’s not much you can do with a Master’s degree in Germanic Studies-especially if you dislike teaching.

  • If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it, and what would you call it?
I don’t see enough good-looking guys on a daily basis. My spell would make average men look like Abercrombie and Fitch models. It would be called ‘Studify.’ It might seem shallow, but aesthetics are important to me. I feel better when I'm surrounded by beauty.

  • If you were to face a boggart, what would it turn into? And what does it turn into when you throw the counter-spell, Riddikulus?
The boggart would turn into my dentist. No one likes dental appointments, but they’re even worse for me because I gag easily and have a fear of throwing up. I also usually end up having a panic attack when I’m having a filling done and I can’t move while there’s drill, suction, and a vacuum in my mouth. It makes me feel like I have no control over what is happening to me.

The Riddikulus spell would show my dentist having dental work done by me. (I have absolutely no training in dentistry, by the way ;)

  • What do you look for in a friend?
Most of my friends are laid back people with a good sense of humor. They are easy to talk and enjoy thought provoking conversation as well as mindless banter. I can trust them to be honest with me and to help me out when I need something. Perhaps most importantly, I feel like I can be myself around them

  • What trait most annoys you about other people?
When it concerns my everyday interaction with people--clinginess. I like company, but I also need my alone time, so it annoys me when someone calls constantly or wants to hang out all the time. I hate always having to come up with excuses as to why I can't talk or go out. On a more serious, global level, people who show a complete lack of concern and for the environment, wildlife, and animals. It drives me mad that humans think they are the most important beings on the planet, which, incidentally, we are destroying.

  • What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?

Ambitious- I always want to be the best, or at least very good at whatever I do, and I’m constantly trying to improve the quality of my life. I’ve never “settled” for anything, nor can I imagine ever doing so.

Creative- I love the feeling that giving form to something that hasn’t existed previously gives me. If it brings enjoyment to other people, then I feel that I’ve accomplished something.

Sense of humor- The ability to joke and laugh when things go wrong can improve the quality of life. Some people get angry or depressed, but that only makes a situation more unpleasant for themselves and for others. Not that I never get angry or depressed, but my sense of humor does help me be more positive.

Imaginative- I don’t know what I’d do without my imagination. I live inside my head. Fantasies and daydreams like reality to me; life would be so boring without them. But I don’t use my imagination for escapism alone. It has helped me succeed in school and work because I’m able to look at things from a different angle and see things others often don’t notice.

Intelligent- I can retain information and draw connections better than many people. This has helped me to achieve more and work less, allowing me more time for fun. It also helps me to understand people better and to see the deeper meaning in language and visual images. I’m not easily fooled because I can usually see through lies and deception.

  • What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?

Impatient- If I want something, I want it now. Maybe it's because I was spoiled as a child. This trait has gotten me into a lot of trouble in the past because, depending on the nature of whatever it was I wanted to have or do, I've shirked my responsibilities, spent money I didn't have, manipulated people, etc. The worst part is that, when I look back, I often realize it wasn't worth it. But at the time, I thought I couldn't live without it.

Impulsive- I often act on emotion, even when I try to reason with myself. I will say and do things I wouldn’t have if I’d given myself time to calm down. It has also caused me financial problems because I’d go out and buy things whenever I was unhappy, even if I couldn’t afford them. I’m getting better controlling myself, but it’s still difficult.

Lack of confidence-- I have a tendency to underestimate myself and doubt my abilities.

Procrastination-I put everything off until the last minute, even the things I actually want to do, so I’m rarely able to give it my best effort. Instead, I just rush to get it done. I probably would have achieved much more by now if I could just get started.

Too many interests- From the time I was little, I had so many interests and hobbies that it was impossible to give any of them my best effort. I’ve played the piano and the guitar, painted, knitted, read tarot, written, and much more, but as soon as I’ve started to develop one skill, I’d become preoccupied with something else and abandon it for weeks or months or years.

  • Define in your own words the following key traits:
    • Courage: Courage is being able to face one’s fears and not backing down in the face of danger. It is doing what is right instead of taking the easy way out.
    • Loyalty: Loyalty is being faithful and devoted to a person, group, or cause and keeping one’s allegiance to them even when it would be easier or more beneficial to abandon them.
    • Intelligence: Intelligence is being able to retain and comprehend information easily, using one’s knowledge to make connections and draw correct conclusions, and being able to approach a problem from various perspectives to find the best solution.
    • Ambition: Ambition is knowing what one wants and striving to achieve it. Many people want money, power, fame, etc., but the ambitious are those who actually make it a goal and set about achieving it.
