I think you hit it on the head: Doug is a good writer - Last Human and the many touching moments in BtE attest to that - but he really does have a poor sense of pacing, which causes his humour writing to suffer. I'm really hoping the show does return, but that if it does, they get someone else in to co-write and polish things up a bit. And of course, I hope they're given the budget to bring back the audience as they would have preferred

I forgot to mention that I was also pleasantly surprised by the third-episode arrival of a particular character whose appearance had mercifully been kept secret.

It was painful as a three-part RD episode and watching it day by day made me dread the next part more.
The pay-off redeems it a little but....hmm.
Oh and the Norman Lovett bitching is a little OTT but maybe a little on the money.
