I saw Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" this weekend - I liked it, but nowhere near as much as "The Nightmare Before Christmas". One small spoiler from the film: ( Read more... )
Yea, I was kinda hoping he'd end up with Emily as well, but as soon as I saw that Victoria wasn't a shrew or a bitch, I knew that wansn't gonna fly. Oh well. :(
Victoria was not bad, so I guess I was supposed to root for her, but I also had more sympathy for Emily. It seems to me that the younger Tim Burton might have been willing to tell the story where the corpse gets the happy ending, but he seems more establishment now :(
Ultimately, I think that's why I can't rate this movie anywhere near as highly as I rate "A Nightmare Before Christmas". Because I think it was a failure on the part of Burton to flesh out Victoria more and MAKE the audience care about Victor ending up with her.
In "A Nightmare Before Christmas", Sally was a fully realized character in her own right, so when the film ends with Jack realizing that he loves her, it's earned. This ending? Not so earned, I don't think.
The movie seems to take for granted that the living character has a greater right to be happy. Which I can sort of understand, but it is not really the morality I expect from a Burton film.
