Settling in

I arrived in Ithaca yesterday around dinnertime. By now I have unpacked, and already made a trip to the grocery store which is about a 5 minute walk away. I dislike orientation. Mainly because I feel like a complete loser trying to make "friends". I just want classes to start. I think I'll feel more comfortable (perhaps more confident about myself ( Read more... )

So far, I have not met anyone who has dewormed orphans in Somalia, but then again, I haven't been actively searching.

is there a scavenger hunt on, or something?

Oh! That's a reference to "Legally Blonde"... When Elle Woods first gets to Harvard Law School and goes to orientation, she meets all these people who have triple PhDs in Russian Literature and Biochemistry, and one of them says he spent the last 6 months deworming orphans in Somalia...

Although... a scavenger hunt might be fun.

I feel the same way...the courses are difficult and my time is at a premium, but I don't fit in with the other students, so, for example, at the party they had last night, I just sat alone in a corner and drank beer because no one would continue a conversation I started.

I wasn't aware that things were so cliquish...I guess we don't need friends for the first year, right? There's plenty to do in the classroom.
