If a tree falls in a forest...

Inspired by a recent conversation about the topic with a friend, I've decided to take a census on the matter:
If a tree falls in a forest, and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound? All comments and rationales are welcome!

Hm...it makes sound waves but if no one hears them, I suppose not.

no. sounds are created in the ear drum. if there is no ear drum around to interpret the sounds as sounds, then the sounds don't exist.

A good point. That was along the lines of what she had said- that it does create vibration, but it must be perceived by someone as a sound, to count.

I friended a bunch of teens and almost-teens from Transyouth. Just trying to make some GLBTQ buds. I'm an ally, but I'm really interested in gay rights and in reading about all kinds of different people, etc. Hope you don't mind my adding you.
