Application

Arcana: Hanged Man
Time Period: 1934
Name: Hans Koenig
Gender: Male
Blood Type: AB
Birthday/Sign: September 9 / Virgo
Age: 18
Occupation/Grade: Grade 12
Room:

PB: Hotaro Oreki/Hyouka, drawings, etc
Appearance: Standing at modest height of 5’11”, Hans looks much shorter due to his ever-present slouch, be it sitting, standing or even lounging, though this is partly due to his over-full bag, as he prefers to keep most of his school things with him. (Just to avoid having to repack them and accidentally leave homework/a book/pen,etc when it’s needed.) Just by looking at him, it can easily be seen that Hans isn’t one to fuss or pay much attention to appearances and remains completely unremarkable as a result.

No fancy haircuts for him, and a cut only happens when it’s about to blind him. His hair is dark and seemingly finger-combed in the mornings, and then left at the mercy of nature for the rest of the day. The uniform is worn to precision so that he wouldn’t be reprimanded, but all bets are off when it comes to anything else. Casual wear is bought at the first affordable shop within his vicinity, and even then, they’re at the recommendation of the shop keeper. His only preference is that his attire is comfortable for slouching and lounging with minimal upkeeping and doesn’t take special attention.

He walks in a shuffle, so his shoes are often scuffed in the back and are replaced often. His eyes are grey, though his eyes are often drooped so people rarely see them or Hans all proper unless there’s an event or when he’s alert. When he forgets to clean thoroughly, Hans’s nails often have dirt under them after he takes care of his plants.

When Hans speaks, it is with a soft and even cadence that belies the low timbre.

Personality: Hans is outwardly quiet, courteous and polite with everyone he meets that it’s like he’s meant to be as offensively inoffensive as possible. He does only so much with his schoolwork and tasks to pass muster, hardly interacts with other people, doesn’t seem to be riled up, upset or enthused by anything, doesn’t seem to be at all interested in excelling, standing out or, truly, even opening his mouth to speak anything beyond required courtesies. Non-confrontational almost to non-contact, Hans rarely, if ever, speaks his mind.

By all intents and purposes, Hans is a dead fish. Less dramatically, however, it can be said that Hans is a reclusive loner.

All of the above is true to some level or other, but it isn’t so much that he’s stupid, slow, or shy as lazy. Hans is painfully passive that while he does know what he needs to do (family goes, personal goals, et all), very little can snap him out of his cultivated ennui. Outside of tasks forcibly set on him, Hans lives on the bare minimum: he breathes because it’s reflexive, he eats because it’s more problematic if he didn’t, and prefers take the path of least resistance, or rather, the most convenient one without having to do anything.

Following this train of thought, it’s only understandable that Hans puts a lot of effort into making sure that he won’t have to make an effort. It’s when his ennui is threatened that Hans shows that despite everything, his laziness was as much a choice as his nature.

Under the laziness is a sharp mind that is used to observe his surroundings and a calculative mind set on always computing the most effortless and efficient path as possible. However, even when motivated, Hans never acts until he has enough data to act in the most efficient way possible and when necessary to reach his goal, he isn’t afraid to speak up if it gets something done. However, once the crisis has passed, he’ll quickly return to his usual mode of minimal operations.

One of the things he avoids the most is to show that he’s capable, if only because it means that he would have to be tasked with more responsibilities. Because of his lack of interpersonal reactions, he can tend to be awkward. One of the tenets he lives by is that if he is patient and observes long enough, things will start to make sense.

History: Born to the overzealously hardworking Koenigs, Hans is the only son and heir that they stopped working long enough to have. From a young age, Hans watched his parents strive at his family’s booming business, the Otter Publishing, aiming to bring it to national distribution.

Despite his family’s successes, Hans’ parents were always on the fast track, thinking far ahead to consolidate and secure his and the company’s future. While he was encouraged to succeed so that he may follow in their footsteps, his parents were driven to make life as comfortable for him as possible, deciding his future while at the same time discouraging any deviation from such plans, though unintentional.

Hans knew that they did this out of love for him, and “so long as he succeeds,” it was alright for him to be average. This push and pull to be himself and following their expectations gave Hans a uniquely different perspective from his parents. To him, he was surrounded by people who were in a hurry: to be successful, to be rich, to improve on some such; the people he knew wanted to be anywhere that wasn’t “here.”

Bringing the expression “take a step back” to new heights, Hans approached life with this mentality. Without a personal goal or any particular passion, he withdrew himself to watch others, waiting for them to make sense, so that he can see the whys of their goals and purposes. This detachment only increased his own displacement and lacklustre approach to anything; if people were in such a hurry, he was fine cruising along.

It was at this time that his parents - cheerful, life-loving people who were used to Hans’ characteristic reticence and have made it their hobby to orchestrate extreme situations so that he would react - were given the opportunity to move closer to their business in distant Philadelphia. Thinking it a great opportunity to get Hans to at least protest their choice, his parents gleefully signed him up to Adessi Hall in Abaton a few cities over.

Alas, it was not to be. Faced with life away from his parents, the comfort of his home, and living in a dorm with strangers and spending his last year of high school away from his friends, Hans looked at the application form, blinked and told his parents that he was going to start packing (and graciously wished his parents to have a safe trip).
