There's an angel and a demon standing on the sidewalk in a pretty Chicago suburb, in front of a rather normal-looking house. Most people passing down the street, of course, would only see the demon, unless they happened to be kindergarten-aged or younger. But that's not the point ( Read more... )

He puts a hand on her shoulder, not caring about the odd looks he might getting for holding his hand in midair. "You don't have to. Whatever you want."

He give her a little squeeze and drops his hand again. "It's your decision, papagayo."

Of course it is. Because somehow getting her wings meant that she was suddenly a grown up, for all intents and purposes, even though she can't get a job or drive or anything like that.

She has to make the choices.

She catches a glimpse of her mother through one of the windows, and her chest tightens painfully. She might cry before they even get to knocking.

She nods. "Yeah. Okay. Let's do this." She tries to sound confident.

She mostly just sounds scared.

His hand goes to her shoulder again immediately, as much for her comfort as his own nerves. It's empathetic fear, really. That and preemptive guilt. He's the one who suggested this, thought this might help her--if it only makes things worse, well.

He will be a very unhappy demon.

"Do you want to ring the bell, or do you want me to do it?"

"Um." Dusty hesitates. She chews her lip. Something about having to ring the bell at her own home just...

"You," she says. "You're the one they're answering the door for, right?" The wobbly smile she offers is... not very believable.
