Presidential Debate: Round 2 (or I Know Pauly Shore and You, John McCain, are No Pauly Shore)

Last night's debate was odd, from Brokaw's grumpy-old-man-ness to the carpet looking like it was borrowed from Dr. Evil's volcano lair.

Some things that stood out:
- Obama can answer a question.  The group of us watching together were all pro-Obama, but we were wondering where he was going when he started out the "sacrifice" answer talking about 9/11 ( Read more... )

funny, on the first go-round we all missed the most talked-about moment, mccain calling obama "that one."

love the stockdale comparison. it's looking increasingly apt. is perot still alive? is stockdale?

Yeah, we all missed it in the debate. I'm guessing we were getting more pumpkin squares. Mmm...pumkin squares...mmm...

It's odd that of all moments, "that one" was the most talked about. It's not WORTH talking about. There was nothing racial about it. As I believe I mentioned in somebody's account, it's a phrase I use when talking about people in close proximity to a third party and often, those people are you. It's the same as "THAT guy." You know where I picked the phrase up? My friend's Jewish grandmother. And do you know who she was talking about? Her grandson, my friend, whom she obviously held no ethnic bias against.

The moderate hype around "that one" was a manufactured headline grabber. "Was it?" "Wasn't it?" There are real issues to be talking about from that debate, we don't need to make them up.

I don't know man, it seems like the lasting moments from these debates always turn out to be those little personality quirks. No one remembers what bush and gore were arguing about, but they remember Gore sighing and then weirdly and aggressively going to stand near Bush. gore was such an ass in the first two debates. Low info voters don't vote on the issues anyway. I mean, I thought it clearly signaled McCain's contempt for Obama. Whether that means anything in the larger context of the race, I don't know. I appreciate that it's a phrase that other people use in a non-derogatory manner, but combined with how mccain wouldn't even look at obama in the first debate, it stood out. mccain really hates obama in a way that is not reciprocated.
