Elves are one of the standard mythological creatures that fall under the heading "Faerie" as far as mythology and research go. There is a wide variety of legends to choose from as far as how you want the race itself to play out. Nearly every culture on the earth has a version of what they believe elves to be, and it would be very fun to put a semi-scientific twist on that.

There's too much information available for me to just give it to you here, but you should be able to find some really interesting and helpful information with some basic search topics that will work for both books and online sources.

Faerie, Lands of
Wicca, Faerie
Faerie
Bardic Magic

Also, if you're interesting in looking at the specific view of elves taken by JRR Tolkien, his book "The Silmarillion" basically contains his writing notes and backstory for the famous trilogy.
Good Luck with your research.

Heya! Sounds like you have quite the idea there :D go for it!

So are you looking for alternatives to a forest? 'cause it seems like you've brainstormed a lot of ideas of where a society could live remotely, or are you looking more for which one works best? I'm not entirely clear on your question.

Or, are you looking for other suggestions? like...maybe they're urban now because their forests were destroyed and so they live in upper-class high rises in new york, tokyo, london, Dubai, etc? or they live in the redwoods in washington and california and to the outside world they're some kind of "hippie artist commune" or something? (I dunno I'm just spitballing ideas)

so, what are you really asking for here :D I'm sure we can help.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies and the help guys.

I'll have to get my hands on JRR Tolkien 'The Silmarilion'.

Sorry for the confusing and unclear question. I guess I'm just looking for where a society could live remotely and which area/region works the best for them.

I also like your other suggestions - upper-class high rises :)

I hope that's a bit more clear and if not, I do apologize. Once again, thanks for the help :)

Kind Regards,
nyrangersfan

hee yes you do :D it's delightful from a world building perspective.

well, if you're going remote...you can't get much more remote than the Arctic and Antarctic!

Did a quick Google Search and I found this article, here. According to this (and this was going to be one of my suggestions) the Tibetian Plateau is the most remote place on the planet. This could be interesting as you could tie in the old legends of Shangri-la and Mu, and the Sanctuary-canon Vampires eventually settled in nearby India.

Other options could include the northern parts of Canada, islands in the south pacific, parts of the south american rain forest, or the deserts of the sahara in africa (which used to be quite lush but natural climate change created a desert), (and again) the Arctic and Antarctic.

Also, there is always Atlantis. ;)

The Tolkien style elves were heavily influenced by the Norse/germanic elves, the álfar, as opposed to the slightly more recent romance tales involving fairies. Either ( ... )

I was wondering where I could find more information about the Sanctuary-canon Vampires? B/c I did want to tie the canon vampires in with the elves.

I got my hands on a copy of The Silmarilion from a friend today :) so, I'll crack that open during the breaks in between lectures. Also thank you for the links that were of great help.

Kind Regards,
