Ask the person insisting to show you the building code you are supposed to comply with?

the boss is in a tizzy because a clause in the new lease they are negotiating mentions that all modifications and such be code compliant (standard crap), so she is freaking out and wants me to show her the relevant code to prove the work isnt going to get them fined for not being up to code or kicked out of the building.

Essentially I just replaced the phone cable of the previous tenant with network cable, so I'm no more or less compliant than what was already there. Yet not being able to find any regulations, I cannot show that she isnt going to be massively fined and the lease terminated.

I always just ask the property owner's management company for written authorization. But I've haven't done that kinda work in DC proper

Search the DC administrative code here? http://www.dc.gov/

I would think the lease might reference the relevant statutes or code provision?

I'd just call 311 for a starting point.

I would call the Office of Zoning http://dc.gov/agencies/detail.asp?id=67

Or the Department of Small and Local Business Development
http://dc.gov/agencies/detail.asp?id=54

Call and explain what you are looking for. Start by being very nice to the person and then state that you have been calling all day. You will get bounced around but I bet you find the correct department.

Your other option is to call a company that would do this sort of work and feign interest in hiring them and ask what aplicable code they might come up against.

Good luck.
