Here you go! Affiliation: Trainer
Personality: Friendly and open and not the type to harbor grudges, Kairi is not your average 14-year-old girl for several reasons-- and not just because she comes from another world than her best friends, or that her best friends are, in fact, boys. But that'll come later. Though Kairi spends the majority of the game in a comatose state, she rarely stays still when she's up and about. She finds ways to keep herself busy and will often take responsibility to make sure things get done; Sora reports to her and she presents him with an organized list of things they need for the raft, and food. She's just as likely to act as a referee for Sora and Riku's competitions (apparently never seeing her affections as the prize) as she is to join in on some of their races, and she's got a playful and adventurous spirit. She's very fond of teasing her friends and is able to laugh at herself when her own laziness is brought up.
Other than that, Kairi's an optimistic girl (just like so many derps in this series), a bit of a tomboy (because you almost have to be when your best friends are guys) and a dependable friend, one who will risk herself if it means helping those she loves (just like so many derps in this series). Rather than dwell on a past she can't remember, she chooses to find the good things about being where she is now, and is able to put her unease about the unknown aside in favor of excitement and the knowledge that she'll always have a place to return to. She's also been shown to be perceptive and capable of having serious moments, noticing the troubling changes in Riku's behavior before disaster strikes and remarking on this a few times, as well as cryptically telling Sora not to change.
Overall, she's one pure-hearted Princess who likes to have fun but will always be there for her friends.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
- Princess of Heart. What this boils down to, though not as relevant here, is that Kairi is one of seven maidens who was born with no darkness in her heart whatsoever. Where others, upon being attacked by Heartless, would lose their hearts and become Heartless themselves, when she loses her heart, Kairi's body remains untouched by darkness and her heart finds a safe shelter inside of Sora. It may also be because of her status and/or her strong connection to Sora that enables her to restore him to his normal form after he becomes a Heartless. It's assumed that, like the other Princesses, Kairi too possesses the ability to hold back darkness to a degree, and to sense it-- also to some degree.
- Optimistic and friendly. She's had these traits ever since she was a little girl, when she presented Aqua with a flower bouquet shortly after she'd been saved, as a token of her gratitude, and when she very quickly became inseparable with Riku and Sora after she was taken in by their mayor. She's a sweet girl who's quick to smile and doesn't let her lack of memory concerning her past get her down-- or her friend, if she can help it.
- Loyal. Seriously, once you've got Kairi as a friend, she'll always believe in you. Though you see this more in later games with her unwavering faith in Riku, it's still prevalent in the first game. She assures Sora from within his heart that she believes in him, and she agrees not to follow after him after he jokes she'd just get in the way, perhaps realizing this but also giving him her lucky charm and telling him that she'll always be with him. She's even reluctant to leave him and Riku behind, even while Donald and Goofy are encouraging her to book it. Her response at the end when Sora tells her he'll come back is a simple and strong "I know you will!" SHE BELIEVES IN THEM, GODDAMMIT.
- Responsible. Yeah, Kairi's the one with the list of what's needed and what to bring and she keeps the boys on track. Sometimes. Occasionally. If she doesn't give in to the urge to slack off herself.
- Brave and determined. Kairi refuses to believe that Sora's gone and, despite not having really... any method of defending herself, shields his Heartless with her body to keep him from getting hurt from the attacking Heartless. This also doesn't prevent her from wanting to go with him to get Riku back, even if he ultimately talks her out of it.
Weaknesses
- Unlike Sora and Riku, Kairi isn't a fighter. She has to rely on others for her protection, though she at least knows when it's time to get out of there. This kind of sets her in the role of "damsel in distress", though she'd do anything to correct that.
- Has little to no memory of her past before she ended up in the Destiny Islands. While this isn't a glaring weakness, it is a bit of a problem for her, and she only has bits and pieces of fragmented memory about where she came from at the moment.
- Her friends. Like almost every Kingdom Hearts character, this can be both a strength and a weakness. Again, this is seen more later on, but Kairi can and will go TO HELL WITH IT and run to help her friends without any regard for her own safety. The easiest way to get to her is through the people she loves.
- Stubborn. But she's at least capable of listening to reason, so it's not too bad for Kairi.

J-just wait a second, um-- aha! Got it! Green means all systems go, I'm sure of it...
[ Kairi's face suddenly appears on the screen, expression urgent. ]
Hello? This is on, right? I've got a lot of questions for anyone who's got the time to answer, but first, I've got a-- a seahorse, I think, and it just came out of this little red and white ball... [ she trails off, shaking her head helplessly. ] I know seahorses belong in the sea, but I can't find anywhere to--
[ a series of demanding noises from aforementioned seahorse has Kairi looking down, concerned but also incredibly confused. ]
... And this little guy looks more annoyed than anything. Hah, he sorta looks like Sora whenever he loses a race. Are you really okay?
[ another Horseeea! Kairi grins after a minute of close scrutiny and nods, back to full cheerfulness. ]
Right from the seahorse's mouth, I guess. So, since we're talking about stubborn guys... has anyone seen two of 'em? Sora naps a lot and looks like he's always got a bad case of bedhead, and Riku's got silver hair. If anyone knows who I'm talking about, could you let them know they're in trouble for leaving me behind again?
Third Person Sample:
Within the past twenty-four hours, Kairi had witnessed a vast amount of things she'd never have imagined up to that point. The islands being restored from darkness to their former appearance, everyone returned (with the exception of two very important presences), and she'd resigned herself to waiting for her best friends to come back.
But one could only wait for their friends when they were home, and not when they were in a completely new snow-covered world, up to their ankles in snow and shivering like someone who'd never been exposed to this.
... Which was true. Kairi had gotten no sense of familiarity from the woman who claimed to be her mother (and wouldn't a real mother have been more emotional about seeing a daughter she'd lost for nine years?), not even a faint, puzzling recognition, like she'd gotten from Hollow Bastion. And she'd been herded out of the house without even a jacket; the door was locked when she tested it.
Kairi shivered, wrapping her arms around herself, and tried to get her thoughts in order. If she'd stayed on the islands, she would have waited. But this was somewhere new, and she couldn't wait for Sora and Riku to come for her. I'm always with you, she'd told Sora. And she meant it.
But this time, she'd find them. She couldn't stop to consider the fact that they might not even be here. They shared too strong a connection for Kairi to be apart from them for too long, as far as she was concerned.
"Okay!" She reluctantly released herself and propped her hands on her hips. "They've both been through much worse than a little cold! I can do thi-- huh?"
A small capsule had dropped from her backpack, and before Kairi could retrieve it, it opened, an unusually large seahorse was squirming in the snow, and her Pokémon adventure began.
