There was a woman crying on the subway in February. There were likely many women crying on the subway in February, I'm sure, but somehow I managed to only see one. New York has so few private spaces that sometimes the relative anonymity of public transit becomes a sort of reverse haven. I have cried on the train more times than I care to recall, and have been incredibly touched during those moments someone reached out to me. It made things seem less hopeless.

Wow. You're a good person.

I always think about breaking the code when I see someone upset, knowing I'd love someone to just ask, but consider how mortified I'd be if someone broke the code with me.
