HAPPY NEW YEAR! I originally wanted to post a video wishing you guys an awesome new year but then I got some new friends (HI GUYS ♥) and I got all nervous, so I'm writing it out instead. I began this new year hating my cat and having the Bed Intruder song stuck in my head. Is that bad luck ( Read more... )

ah, Happy New Year to you too! In my family, on New Years Day we generally eat smoked sausage with sauerkraut, and my mom puts coins in the sauerkraut. It's supposed to be good luck if you find silver coins. I figure it's pretty unsafe, but w/e. It's the only time of year any of us tolerate sauerkraut, ironically.

That's interesting. It's kind of like king cake, then, I guess? But with sauerkraut. XD I've actually never eaten the stuff, but I don't think I'd like it either.

Are you of German(ic) descent? That tradition sounds totally random, which is why I'm wondering. :P

I've heard of king cake! It is like that. I do not like the stuff. I drown my wurst-on-a-bun in ketchup so I don't have to taste the sauerkraut OTL

I was actually contemplating this as I posted my first comment. I...have no idea, to be honest OTL My family are such American mutts, and have been for generations, that it is entirely possible and likely. In one branch of our family it's said that we have German ancestry along with Scotts-Irish and Native American. It is pretty random, isn't it?

Random indeed! On my dad's side I'm Welsh and Scottish, and on my mom's, German, French, and Native American. So we're both kind of random, but that's fine. :D

Maybe next year you should suggest eating king cake instead of sauerkraut... haha. :P

Happy 2011! My family eats black eyed peas with cabbage for health and money... not sure which is which (and by "my family" I mean, "everyone but me because it's disgusting").

Also, I am sure the razor is not for growing up purposes but simply for... fun. Scientific experiments, if you will. Anything along those lines. I saw my 11yr old cousin over the holidays, and she was up to my shoulder, and I cannot accept that she is that tall/old/mature/etc. I just can't. I remember the day she was born, gah.

Also also, not to be stalking or anything (ok, totally stalking), but for us, the baby in the king cake is not so much good luck as just a baby in the king cake. Representing Jesus and whatnot. No luck involved, but if you find it, you have to buy the next king cake for the group. So... more like... bad luck, if you want to think of it that way, lulz.

What I read last night was that greens like cabbage symbolize money. ;) I've never actually eaten it with greens that I can remember... so I'll be poor forever, most likely.

Well, my brother doesn't have facial hair YET of course (although he seemed to think so!), but the fact that he has a razor is frightening enough. Also, next year he'll be in high school... and that will DEFINITELY be a shock. (It was weird enough watching my friend's younger brother grow up.)

Okay! I'm sorry, but I've only eaten king cake once in my life and am obviously totally ignorant about it. (I've honestly never really celebrated Madri Gras.) Next time I get some I will make sure to be the last to get a piece, so I can make sure I don't get the baby. XD

I'm not surprised - I was entirely unsure of where the tradition comes from, but from what little research I did (read: Wikipedia), it seems it has its origins in Jewish customs, but it also looks like it's popular in the American South.

That tradition sounds pretty cool, really. :D

Hello hello!! :D And happy new year! If you have resolutions, you should share them! It might help you keep them.
Well, MIGHT. I mean, never helped me :p

That's what I was thinking - sharing them with others might be more motivation for me to complete them, simply so I won't be ashamed when I don't. XD
