I used to read his replies in the Adult Section of one of the Philadelphia liberal newspapers (I forgot the name).
Adolescents who partake in abstinence-only programs such as the Silver Ring Thing have an equal chance of contracting STD's as those who do not make virginity pledges. Meaning that the program does nothing, as you already stated. This is the case mostly because abstinence-only education is hardly comprehensive (failing to incorporate any information on birth control amd barrier methods that reduce the risk of STD's or even address the complexities of sexuality)and when those kids who pledge abstinence have sex-breaking their vows- they do so without any knowledge of pre-cautions they should take.
