Hi, everyone! It's time for this week's discussion of BYBR and we start with the

Sorry I haven’t had a chance to write a comment this week. Life has been really crazy busy and stressful. Just want you to know that I’m truly enjoying this reread of your fic. As for the last line, I always took it to mean that Justin WAS meant to be in a relationship with Brian. That Brian’s dream self was admitting that Justin NEEDED to have Brian in his life in some capacity in order to stay afloat. Anyway that’s how I saw it. Xx

So, as the prologue begins, we feel Brian's conflict within himself and as it ends, we realize it applies to Justin, too. That neither of them have actually dealt with the trauma they went through.
Ethan is the bridge between them at that point. As the story progresses, he falls away and new supports emerge. Thanks for always reading and commenting. I truly appreciate it!

I've pondered the Ibiza segues over the years, at times thinking I was too thick to interpret them. But I've found that with re-reads, a sentence will pop up that explains something I missed.
That last sentence, I think, is Ethan telling Brian that Justin's inability to assimilate the bashing, to recall on a conscious level what happened, is holding him down, pulling him down. Hence the 'can't swim' comment. You can't swim if you've got that kind of baggage tied around your neck.
I hope you find time to return to these discussions. I'd love to pick your brain. Especially concerning a certain female character.
