Pondering

How do you tell your friend that you can't stand his conducting style. This is a major question. i don't know how i should do it. his style is confusing and i think its a good part of the reason that sectionals always suck.

man, this is a toughy.

isn't there a somewhat standardized way of conducting? Like the different hand movements for the different meters and such. Does he just need to make his hand movements more defined? or is it a problem with giving cues?

its a problem with the way he beats his pattern. (wow that sounded dirty). he doesn't give clear cues and he doesn't beat steady.

i'm not saying that this couldn't be because half of the section likes to rush while the other half likes to slow down and he's just trying to keep us together, but still it hurts my mind when i count and thigs are off.

hmm... I agree with the method on critique. straightforward and honest. also might help if you didn't do it in front of everyone else. Maybe just get a chance to step aside and show him the proper shape to make and how to do it firmly as to leave no mystery where the beat falls.

being in my position, I often have to critique people. The best thing is to be straightforward and let him know that it's not a personal attack....
