Global Exploration Day!!!

It's July 20th, and I hereby dub this Global Exploration Day.  38 years ago, this nation did the most important thing it has ever done since winning the Second World War.  We landed human beings on the Moon.  This is a date that will be remembered as long as civilizations endure, as long as people look to the stars and wonder.  On July 20th, 1969, ( Read more... )

Ah, yes, the asterisk:

*I realize that the possibility of earth experiencing an apocalypse-scale meteor impact exists, and that eventually our sun will go nova. But to my knowledge the former is staggeringly unlikely (there's been what, like one in the past few hundred million years?) and the latter won't happen for a few billion years. So it seems safe to say that we're good for awhile, and can forestall the evacuation plans at least a few hundred or thousand years. Of course, human caused catastrophes could screw us up much sooner, but if we focus on addressing these (as I argue we should), perhaps they can be prevented, and we certainly couldn't evacuate the planet in time to avoid them anyway.
