Yes, that's correct.  On Monday morning, when I got to Kambi's shop in Calgary, the domestic (Canadian) job coordinator informed me that I'd be heading out on my first field training up here.  My destination?  A well 40 klicks outside of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, a good-sized farming town out on the prairie.  So I came out here with the guy in  ( Read more... )

Some more of my ongoing observations:

Traffic lights here are slightly different than in the US.  Every one I've seen so far has had its lights in a horizontal line, rather than vertical, with red on the left and green on the right.  Also, all the left turn arrows here flash.  Finally, I guess here it's a traffic violation to run a yellow light, not ( Read more... )

A lot of stuff is really expensive up here - at a downtown pub I paid $7.50 for a pint of Alberta-brewed beer, and even at a local neighborhood bar outside the middle of town it's at least $4.50.  A basic, half-ton, 4WD pickup truck starts at $45,000 new, and a new Nissan Murano starts at $40k.  Property is expensive, almost as insane as the ( Read more... )

Well, I'm in the Great White North now.  Haven't checked out Calgary too much yet, as I just got here last night and worked all day, but there's a nice English pub right next to my hotel, which is definitely not a bad thing.  My first impressions are good, though.  With over a million people, it's a big city, the first I've stayed in since visiting ( Read more... )
