{I starting writing this huge long post, and I decided to take the different sections and just post one a day. So that way it's not so overwhelming, and I don't have to use the promise of, say, an express-mailed batch of cookies, to get people to actually read the whole damn thing.}

I find it amusing that you mentioned Philip K Dick. Because not that long ago I read an article about how some publisher was releasing several of his novels (including Do Androids Dream ...) in fancy leather bound, gilted page editions as part of "20th Century American Classics" that they were reprinting. And the writer of this article was disgusted. not because it was genre, but because he knew Dick would be rolling over in his grave if he knew that someone was trying to take his pulp fiction and bind it in leather. Dick took his stuff seriously, but never wanted to be part of anybody's "cannon" he just wanted to write good pulp and tell a good story. I'd be pissed if anybody adapted any of my stories incorrectely (whether the story was good or bad to begin with). But his point was that Dick would have hated being treated so pretenciously ( ... )
